Now the #Boulder Public Library, newly under a library district, is running its own cafe. I think this counts as the town's only community owned and governed coffee shop.

Signal is a good reason (along with Wikipedia, Mastodon, and Firefox) that we need way more nonprofit tech.

I love ballet and I hate it. I love dance. I think ballet should take a long hard look at itself, and grow up. Stop damaging young people's bodies. You can create beauty without crippling people with unnatural movements and body expectations.

In any case this is a fascinating article about the history of The Nutcracker Ballet.

in reply to Muse

@Andreas Geisler I knew some of that, but some details I did not. Fascinating article.
in reply to Muse

The Nutcracker is what inspired me to take ballet classes at five years-old. The position that woman in the photograph is holding is part of why I finally left.

My ballet school had a choreographer who insisted that a young woman in a pas de deux hold both her arms back for a similar dip. She told him she would slip out of her partner's arms, she wanted at least one arm forward, but he insisted. She slipped and her nose was broken. When she came back the choreographer told her that it wouldn't happen again and wanted the same position. Physics continued to work in the same way. Her nose was broken a second time. He showed no remorse.

It was the last straw for her and for me. I refused to be a part of such cruelty. We have a right to be treated with respect and not as play toys for people seeking social status.

Human actions have led to the deaths of more than 100,000 Bornean orangutans since 1999, mainly for crop protection, bushmeat or the illegal wildlife trade.

For the first time in 15 years, researchers surveyed residents of Kalimantan, the Indonesian section of Borneo, to find out why people kill the great apes and whether conservation projects help protect them.

First Resources has consistently denied operating shadow companies. However, The Gecko Project gathered insider testimony and corporate documents linking the company and the Fangiono family to plantations clearing rainforest in Indonesian Borneo.

T G P calculates that companies controlled by the group have cleared more than 95,000 hectares (235,000 acres) of forest since First Resources announced its zero-deforestation pledge in 2015.

Having ublock origin on your mobile browser is a game changer - and soon Firefox will be the only way to get it on your desktop browser too.

Remember Google's plan described in discovery documents from one of its antitrust lawsuits: in the name of privacy, block 3rd party ads and use the dominance of chrome to only allow google ads at the browser level. Your browser choice is not a neutral choice, google sees it as an integral part of their strategy to monopolize ads, and with that the entire web.

FAQ for post repliers since this has escaped my usual circles
in reply to jonny (good kind)

is there an actual link to the document or to an article reporting on it (couldn't find one)?

People use to find me paranoid when I said it was the intent... (in a company that had all to lose with this)

Yep - page 94, project NERA and the privacy sandbox

"Google is trying to hide its true intentions behind a pretext of privacy.
Google does not actually put a stop to user profiling or targeted advertising—it puts Google’s Chrome browser at the center of tracking and targeting."

My mother, Leslie Joyce Silberman, died today. The past few years were very difficult as she struggled with dementia. But she whispered "I love you" to my sister yesterday, and mouthed those words to me two days ago, for which I'm deeply grateful. Thank you for everything Mom. I'll love you forever.

Born in 1848, Caroline Still Anderson completed high school at 15. When she enrolled at Oberlin College, she was the only Black student in her class.

Anderson went on to become a physician, driven to improve the social & political conditions of Black people. She also served as a prominent a social reformer in Philadelphian society.

Correction: Linked article says it was her father William Still who was 2nd only to Tubman:

"William Still, described as being “second only to Harriet Tubman in underground railroad operations”, was an active and prominent abolitionist in Philadelphia who spent nearly all of his adult life as a businessman, author, and philanthropist in the service of African American liberation and advancement"

@sadele2 You’re right. Although I first came across that detail on the AWIS site awis.org/historical-women/dr-c… I linked to Temple bc it has more detail. I will edit since this isn’t clear & Temple would likely be more accurate.

Last month my partner and I were thrilled to find this little clump of mushrooms in the woods because that's who we are as people.

There was just enough light left to take this photo, which I submit for day four of my #ArtAdventCalendar

Every now & then I get an email offering to "help grow my social media presence."

No thanks. And I expect it's the kind of thing where ppl pay $ for bot followers.

That said, I have an Instagram account that I'm not particularly active on & received one such “offer” about increasing engagement there today.

But when I scrolled down, I noticed something curious… they already appear to be using my photo as a satisfied client 🤔

The Marvels is ending its theatrical run as the lowest grossing movie in MCU history with $80M earned domestically and $197M. This is a shame since it’s actually a good movie and the MCU has delivered far worse, even just this year.

I will admit that even though I saw the movie I was not planning to see it. I only did because I had a few hours to kill in between games at my son’s basketball tournament in a different city.

I am fatigued by the MCU and I’m not alone.

variety.com/2023/film/box-offi…

in reply to Dare Obasanjo

Might watch it once it hits Disney+ but I’m feeling the same with MCU fatigue.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron After waiting a decade for Thanos to appear (from the first Avengers), I think most people moved on from Marvel after Avengers Endgame.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Disney+ seems like a contributor to box office failings. There’s no urgency to go to the theater when you can wait a few months and effectively get if for free.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron same for me too. Too many misses/wastes of time. It’s hard to justify going to the theater when it’s gonna hit Disney+ a couple of months later.

It's that time of year where I occasionally remind the world of the existence of this cursed bit of generative music I made years ago: Endless Jingling, which mashes up a random selection of three of four different carols on each reload, jumping randomly between measures of each ad infinitum.

You'll need to click to make it make sound. I'm sorry in advance.
