Someone at work ordered a bunch of cheap "slap bracelets" for a silly project and I said "Hey, do you think if I cut this open it'll just be an old tape measure inside?"

And yup...

Here it is then: My manifesto for small, static web apps.

If you wish to comment/reply on this, please read the intro on what a manifesto is before you do.

rosswintle.uk/2024/02/a-manife…

With that in mind the summary is:

- Static first/only
- No login
- Don't store user data
- Use the smallest JS library possible
- Use web standards as much as possible
- Use simple build steps that won't break
- “Done” is a goal
- Zero-maintenance (and easy maintenance) is a goal
- Don’t minify
- Be accessible

in reply to Ross Wintle

thanks for this. A great, concise template that says so much.

Born in 1906, computer scientist Grace Hopper invented the first compiler for computer programming language & was among the first programmers of the Harvard Mk1 computer.

Hopper popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages & paved the way to develop COBOL (an early high-level programming language). She originated the term "bug" to describe computer glitches & became a celebrated Rear Admiral in the US Navy. news.yale.edu/2017/02/10/grace… #science #history

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I once rode an elevator with Grace Hopper.

BTW, there is a Grace Hopper/Anita Borg institute.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I had the privilege of meeting her once, although I was too young at the time to fully appreciate it. She was invited to speak to the Sigma Xi chapter at Dupont in Delaware, and my dad took me along to hear her. She was in uniform at the time, and a fascinating speaker.

Let's talk about Japan, the UK, Republicans, and recession....

If they break it make them pay for it. Boycott ALL Republican Businesses and Cease doing business with the Republicans and their family members. Refuse to serve them in restaurants, Uber service, and any form of Service they might hire temporarily. Pull the Rug out From Under their smug little A**es and show them their failure to run the government means they deserve NOTHING. Sabotage has a price.

#BeauOfTheFifthColumn

in reply to Joseph Teller

I think targeted boycotts would be much more effective. It's neigh near impossible to boycott half (or more) of the businesses out there. But if people can target one business (say, Exxon), while making it known why the business is being targeted, other businesses will surely note any success from the boycott.
in reply to Joseph Teller

This is a refined target, those politicians ALL have families that have businesses or own businesses themselves. They usually are NOT as big as an Exxon. Many of them are small businesses. Hit them in their own personal direct wallets.

The French Revolutionary Calendar had 10 days a week. They used it for 12 years. As far as I know, it did not lead to space-time difficulties, but it did lead to Napoleon, who was a bit of a disruption in himself. So if a French John Lennon in say about 1800 sang, "Oooh I need your love babe, ten days a week," it would not be hyperbole, but perhaps just a manifestation of the "many worlds" version of multiverse theory.
