so Valve knows I use their highly capable hard core handhelt gaming machine almost exclusively to play Stardew Valley (and they want me to share that fact)

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

I absolutely adore the original film. That said something that often seems to be missing from franchise spinoffs after, including this trailer, is the sense of satire suggesting that the Federation may actually be a propaganda spewing cause of the war with the bugs rather than just the "might is right" good guys.

I miss the poking fun at unthinking American militarism that I loved in Starship Troopers.

It's nice to see someone talking sense about the whole blue light silliness!

How much does your phoneโ€™s blue light really delay your sleep? Relax, itโ€™s just 2.7 minutes

Itโ€™s one of the most pervasive messages about technology and sleep. Weโ€™re told bright, blue light from screens prevents us falling asleep easily. Weโ€™re told to avoid scrolling on our phones before bedtime or while in bed. Weโ€™re sold glasses to help filter out blue light. We put our phones on โ€œnight modeโ€ to minimise exposure to blue light.

But what does the science actually tell us about the impact of bright, blue light and sleep? When our group of sleep experts from Sweden, Australia and Israel compared scientific studies that directly tested this, we found the overall impact was close to meaningless. Sleep was disrupted, on average, by less than three minutes.

in reply to Muse

...and it probably has nothing to do with the color of the light but the activity, interest, arousal etc.
in reply to Muse

I wonder how much of the perceived sleep disruption was psychosomatic? (i.e. you are told blue light can have a detrimental effect on sleep quality, and so you subconsciously make it so.)

It's happening! My book about Mastodon and the fediverse is now entering the production phase!

So relieved and delighted to have this stuff out into the world where it can help new (and maybe also some experienced) fedi admins and mods think through their work. And maybe help convey to others at least some of what makes the fediverse such a structurally interesting place.

I'm even more optimistic about the fediverse than I was when we jumped into thisโ€”and sobered, too, by how much work there is to be done. But I think it's doable.

#OTD in 1911.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre by museum employee Vincenzo Peruggia and was not recovered until two years later.

The theft and subsequent recovery in 1913 led to the publication of many cultural depictions such as the 1915 opera Mona Lisa, two early 1930s films (The Theft of the Mona Lisa and Arsรจne Lupin) and the song "Mona Lisa" recorded by Nat King Coleโ€”one of the most successful songs of the 1950s.

You might want to reconsider your use of Anaconda / Conda. Updated terms of service are unclear about what is and isn't allowed under their free tier, with potential of contamination of "off limits" packages due to dependency resolution (using environment files).

@marcoshuerta Ow, thanks for this! I didn't look for alternatives yet and this might just deal with all the concerns I have.

I mentioned on LinkedIn that the backlash might be swift with people pivoting to alternatives fast, but I didn't know the ecosystem was already in place.

in reply to Koen Hufkens, PhD

The `conda` package manager (and mamba) are BSD-3, so Anaconda's TOS only apply to their repository/channels. miniforge uses the conda package manager, but the default channel is conda-forge (which I prefer anyway...)

conda-forge had Apple Silicon binaries of pandas etc early on, so I've been using their channel via miniforge since I got an M1 Mac Mini a few years back.
