Interesting perspective

What size population can Australia sustain? Or should we avoid trying to answer the question?

...
"Although sustained below-replacement fertility will pose serious potential challenges for much of the world over the course of the century, it also presents opportunities for environmental progress," they wrote.

"Alongside strong pro-environmental regulations, a smaller global population in the future could alleviate some strain on global food systems, fragile environments, and other finite resources, and also reduce carbon emissions.

"A 2012 study suggests that if global population were to follow a low-growth rather than a medium-growth path, worldwide carbon emissions would be 15 per cent lower by 2050 and 40 per cent lower by 2100.

"The 2023 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report likewise suggests that low population growth (a result of low fertility) is an important factor in limiting global warming.

"However, increasing consumption per capita due to economic development could offset the benefits of smaller populations."

The whole world needs fewer humans, by an order of magnitude.

It's wild how social media outside of the fediverse has deteriorated. You have followers, but if your post doesn't please some opaque algorithm, they'll never see what you post. You have to avoid certain words to please the algorithm. If you refresh the page good luck finding the same posts again. And people put up with it.

it's a really important concept that isn't talked about enough. I think people have come to expect that they will see everything from their friends ala email/sms but will only see what the corporation decides to show them in media ala social media platforms but also TV etc. #ActivityPub and rss (real podcasts) break that. people might care at the personal level but it matters culturally. #DemocracyOfReach

I managed to come across one of these charming fellows: an Eastern Brown Snake. It's the second most venomous land snake in the world after the Inland Taipan. I was walking through the park and carefully watching where I stepped, because it is froggy season and snakes like eating froggies. I was about to step down one path, saw the snake and thought--let's not go that direction. As I was walking away I thought: I should have taken a picture, to which I immediately replied to myself, "Are you nuts?!"
in reply to Muse

@smellsofbikes Where I am the snakes are fat and happy. Soooo many frogs to eat! The fellow I spotted waited until I left, then when I turned to look, he was leaving his sunny patch and slithering into the grassy undergrowth. I hear the snakes in the outback will chase a person upon occasion. Probably in greater need of food.
in reply to Muse

Imagine the snake's point of view - it weighs what, a couple of pounds and apart from its bite/venom it is relatively defenseless. And we are at 50x its weight, capable of faster movement (on our legs), we have arms and teeth, and we are overall the most deadly species on the planet. The snake has good reason to be scared.

Three toads rescued from freezing in the dry pond. Should we try to a) bury them somewhere below the frost line, or b) overwinter them inside?

I believe they are Canadian Toads (Anaxyrus hemiophrys).

Any toad-keeping advice welcome!

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

Film photography took a back seat in the 2000s and 2010s because it couldn't compete with digital cameras' speed and convenience.

But does that still hold true in 2024?

Apparently, not. Miles Myerscough-Harris shot the Jests game on Portra, had it developed, and posted the results as the game continued.

I discuss this idea further on the blog: analog.cafe/comments/k676

What was the fastest film photo turnaround for you?

in reply to Dmitri โ˜•๏ธ

Jack's Lab in Bristol and Come Through Lab in Manchester offer same-day development for 5 GBP extra if you bring the film before 2pm or 3pm, so probably that.

this is great. And we can definitely add some instructions in the future, e.g. "To be hugged twice a day, tucked in at night. Please don't spill any coffee or tea on me, and don't bathe me." Haha

Growing up in Cumberland County, I never really felt at home. Something always felt off about living someplace the civil war came to โ€“ that left scars on the area and took lives from local families โ€“ yet still had assholes flying Confederate flags.

Saddens, but doesn't surprise, me when I go home to visit my mom and see Trump banners all over the damned place.

in reply to ferricoxide

@ferricoxide Can't say I saw too many Confederate flags growing up, outside of a Dukes of Hazzard context.

Soviet linguist Yuri Knorozov was instrumental in deciphering Mayan script. His whole life he tried to be co-credited with his cat Asya but his editors always refused. In 2012, the Mexicans honored him with a monument that included his beloved cat.

I honestly think BlueSky is nothing but a Twitter clone and nothing else, and will end just like Twitter, but again, this is just what i think, i don't know for certain but i'd like to hear opinions from other people.
