I'm a grad student working on a multimedia project aiming to shed light on the challenges faced by rent-burdened New Yorkers and to amplify the voices of resistance. But I can't do it alone. Your involvement would mean a lot to me. Share your story about the impact of high rent and gentrification on your life and how you are fighting back against your predatory landlord!

Death of Two Great Open Source Emulators #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/2zba7mgqpKE
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I was planning to get one of those samsung tab ultras for uni, as the timing would match with the snapdragon gen 4 release (the one that's beefier than an M2 or 3) so that I could also play zelda tokt on it (their displays are gorgeous). I do have the apk of the last release, but it's a bummer I'm probably stuck with what's supported right now unless someone dares to continue development (which, tbh, is probably going to happen).

in reply to Muse

If you follow the multiple universe theory, a person can travel through time and possibly change someone else's future, but they cannot change their own future.

theconversation.com/time-trave…

in reply to Muse

This is touched upon in Simon Hawke's The Ivanhoe Gambit - a time traveler takes the place of Richard the Lionheart to prove his theory ... that a timeline 'split' (changed event) does not become catastrophic if the time traveler continues to exert pressure on the changed timeline, forcing the two versions further apart.

(Richard is killed in 1199. His brother, John, takes the throne and proves so inept that the barons rebel and force him to sign the Magna Carta. But what if Richard doesn't die, and the Magna Carta is never signed ...?)

Beowulf, translated into Gen Z English. “A smol bean to start with, he would glow up hard later on / As his powers got fire af and his rizz went viral. Legend.” I think this is easier to read in the original Old English… mcsweeneys.net/articles/gen-z-…
in reply to kottke.org

Maria Dahvana Headley's translation did a better job translating "Hwaet!" as "Bro!". But I do think we need to stan Old English for having "Whale Road" such a great phrase that it's preserved in almost every version.

Ask yourself: Are your photo backups *actually* private?

Privacy pioneer and advocate @naomibrockwell explores the dangers of using default Apple and Google photo backups, recommending Nextcloud as a top go-to solution to keep your photos private.

#WhoOwnsYourPhotos? #privatephotobackup

youtu.be/n_kTzu8NEyg

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

Yeah, the NextCloud solution is great until… your iOS NextCloud client de-auths every few months and after re-login the auto upload is disabled, you have to configure it again and guess what was the last photo synced and do a boring manual sync.
in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

Yeah, I've been using #nextcloud to upload my photos from my (and my fam's) phones for YEARS, i can't imagine ever sending them to google/apple, what a nightmare!

My favorite part is, when my phone can't reach my nextcloud server it waits, and uploads when it can.

i also overuse the ability to keep my MP3s synced on my phone, because screw using bandwidth to stream. Music in Airplane Mode? ✅

🚧 [WIP] Prototyped/built out a page for all the good podcasts with self-contained seasons or story arcs that I've listened to over the years. I love this media format so much.

Preview: daverupert.com/limited-runs

in reply to Dave Rupert

First, I love this and think this would be a great idea worth refining.

But, I have to ask, which is your favorite TAZ season?

Mine is Amnesty. They totally avoided a "sophomore slump" by switching game systems and delivering a well-rounded actual high-stakes story. (The stakes were technically high in Balance but DnD is meant for the heroes to always prevail, which makes for epic but predictable climaxes.)

Writing this also reminds me of the Dark Dice podcast, which I also highly recommend if you want some Eldritch horror mixed with your DnD.

A Completely Normal Rust Project #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/COcTSXXYX4w

A neighbour up the street had a lemon-scented gum. During the warm months, every morning on my way to the shops I have enjoyed its wonderful scent. And acknowledged the tree with a smile of appreciation.

Today I am sad because I just came home to find tree removalists disposing of the last of that tree. When I saw them the other day I asked, "You aren't going to take down the gum are you?" The fellow gave me an ironic smile and said, "Oh no!" He was lying obviously. I had hoped he was just going to be trimming it.

I can understand why the neighbour brought it down. They already had one tree fall on their house and through their roof. I am still feeling grief. The street suddenly doesn't feel quite as friendly.

in reply to Muse

I gather this is standard practice for wooden shrines and temples in Japan and possibly also India. They go one step further and ensure that parts are replaced on a regular schedule of rotation and that the necessary craft skills are also maintained.

I think this might be one of the worst written Arch news announcements I've ever read, there's absolutely no details on what needs to be done, again Reddit, Lemmy and the Endeavour forums are the actual place to learn anything about Arch. archlinux.org/news/mkinitcpio-…

yeah, checking out the Reddit comments are indeed useful.
At this point I think my system loads the microcode during GRUB-bing, so I will have to check what the heck I should be doing.
