honesty sounds like a good idea, because I'm sort of tired of watching new staff and having to wait for a new season (if it comes, which it usually does nowadays)

im gonna have to rewatch what i watched before cuz i forgot almost everything that happened

@wolfram_roesler @sinus @smartwater @lernbuddy Everything on the internet is a security risk 😉 It all depends on your threat profile. Of course, anyone can hire a dozen Nextcloud developers to provide a secure solution, but they won't be cheap. Nextcloud partners benefit from our help with early security patches, extra testing, professional support, bug fixes, etc. You will have to decide if the price outweighs the risk for yourself.

@wolfram_roesler @sinus @smartwater @lernbuddy Anyone can make Nextcloud secure given a particular threat profile, with proper administration and infrastructure considerations.

Of course, it is a bit harder at a business scale than for home users (which we try to make SUPER easy with our all-in-one Docker container). But just like a home user benefits from our help and expertise when they use the Docker AIO, a partner can benefit from our help. That gives you, as a customer, some assurance.

This was in a section labeled “futurology” and I was actually trying to find the ray kurzweil book or anything by yudkowsky for this joke but I don’t know what “ray kurzweil” is in korean letters and I don’t even know if yudkowsky ever writes anything long-form print that people actually read

I've written a chunky post about my ideas and challenges I see for the design of the Liblast Framework.

The Liblast Project aims to build a framework for making FPS games and produce an FPS game called Liblast.

For all that to work, we need a lot of educated, forward-looking design decisions.

I am taking inspiration from the Quake/Source engine family, but also from Liblast legacy game and other work I've done.

Please chime in 😀

LMAO what is he even asking for? Like they tweaked and fixed a hole in their refund policy and you reported that exactly as is. What more could he possibly want?

Poor guy, what is he going to do if no one tells him what to think? Also, what information are you proxying that's meant to rip people off?

interesting. the advanced access page mentions that the 14-day refund window will only apply after the game's release date. and yet they count playtime in advanced access as playtime for the refund policy. maybe there's a mistake?

as much as i would love to ditch windows if i could, that "just" is holding a LOT of weight
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I mean, if a person really needs a Windows only program that doesn’t work well with Wine, then maybe I’d say use a Windows 11 VM.

But yeah, Windows 11 (the original release no less) is what turned me from a dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux user to a full-time Linux user.

Enough is enough with these ads, this is getting really ridiculous. We just need more Linux pre-installed laptops; fortunately, @slimbook FINALLY has a US ANSI keyboard option for the Fedora Slimbook.

Steam refunds get adjusted to account for pre-release playtime gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/stea…

#Steam #Valve

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

IMO it should be the other way around - consumers should be able to refund early access games anytime during this stage, and Steam should allow another 2h of playtime after full release. It's early access - consumers are testers, what if game turn to be a dud or stuck in ea forever? IMO this change shifts responsibility to consumer over unfinished product. It's not fair.

If Fedora 40 had a headlining change, it might be @kde Plasma 6. The KDE SIG have brought over all the hard work from that community to give you a solid desktop experience from day 1.

We're also pushing technology forward by making this release Wayland-only, though X11 apps will still work!

Plasma 6 is also available for our Kinoite users. :kinoite:

The story of frequent persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in multiple organs after mild Covid keeps getting stronger, and correlates (odds ratio >5) with symptoms of Long Covid

Disappointed to learn Cohost has been started by people from the fediverse. You know what the fediverse is but you learned the wrong lessons from it. Yes, I also think some servers are not operated professionally and blocks often get misused, but that is not a reason to replace a free and open system with a locked down one. I wrote on why decentralization matters back in 2018:

LOL they did that because they want to keep user lock-in via monetization an option for them. Clowns

Happy to share the latest manuscript from our lab, in which we propose that eukaryotes evolved from a genomic chimera of Asgard archaea and giant viruses.

biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20…

This is a controversial topic, but we believe we have strong evidence to suggest a critical viral role in eukaryogenesis.

#viruses #protists #eukaryotes #evolution #TreeOfLIfe #archaea

in reply to Frank Aylward

Over the last decade, strong evidence has accumulated that Asgard archaea are the closest cellular relatives of eukaryotes, but it has remained unclear why some eukaryotic genes, such as multi-subunit RNA polymerase and some DNA polymerase subunits, do not show clear affinity to archaea (i.e. they support a 3-domain tree). We propose that these 3D genes were acquired from viruses, and that eukaryotes are therefore a archaeal-virus chimera.
in reply to Frank Aylward

As bizarre as this all sounds, I believe we have strong phylogenetic evidence supporting this model. Importantly, this model has also been proposed before by Phil Bell based on first principles or eukaryotic organization and similarities between the nucleus and virus factories formed by viruses during infection

doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2022.858…

in reply to Frank Aylward

absolutely looking forward to studying the paper. Shocked me awake at 1:30 am 😀
in reply to Frank Aylward

How cool is that. Been looking for a paper I read 15 or 20 years ago proposing a viral theory of DNA origin, whereby an inserted DNA virus on an RNA genome would then replicate the whole bacterial genome as DNA, and the bacterium became dependent on that insertion from then on. Will read yours and Phil Bell’s to see if I can find a reference to it.
in reply to Albert Cardona

@albertcardona thanks! Patrick Forterre has published some similar work on how viruses led to the emergence of DNA pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/164764…
