In a country filled with the NY Times, be the Philadelphia Inquirer

This pains me no end after a lifetime of subscribing, but the @nytimes has lost its way at a time when the need for exemplary journalism is at its greatest.

I've seen more than a few folks on my Mastodon timeline express enthusiasm about Glaze, a system whose goal is to protect artists against style mimicry by generative models.

If you're using this work, or otherwise have heard of it and thought "wow this is neat I'm happy people are doing it", I strongly recommend you read this blog post by security & privacy researchers Nicholas Carlini & Florian Tramèr about evaluating Glaze's claims: spylab.ai/blog/glaze/

Marcel Marceau used Mime to Save Lives in WWII

"His name is synonymous with the art of mime, a performer whose silent expressions spoke volumes. But beyond his pale-faced persona and invisible walls lies a story of remarkable bravery and heroism. During World War II, Marceau used his unique talents to save children from the horrors of Nazi-occupied France, first using mime to help children quietly escape and keep them calm during perilous escapes across borders. For Marcel and his earliest young students, mime was a powerful tool of survival."

Wine 9.12 brings a rewrite of the CMD.EXE engine, Mono updates

More importantly if I may be selfish (on MacOS, not Linux): how is ARM64 platform support shaping up? I’m guessing the relevance for running non-x86 Windows binaries (on Linux, MacOS and any other supported operating systems) will go up now that there are official Windows 11 on ARM laptops to buy from Microsoft and their Windows hardware partners.

Arizona Iced Tea founder explains why he will never increase the $0.99 price of his tea:

“We’re successful. We’re debt-free. We own everything. Why? Why have people who are having a hard time paying their rent have to pay more for their drink? Maybe it’s my way to give back."

I made the cardinal parenting mistake of giving my daughter all of the play-doh colors at the same time. Though when she's older, this could be a useful way to introduce entropy
in reply to Frank Aylward

It's inevitable. As a kid, I only had colored clay for about a week. For the rest of my childhood, I had gray.

"I do not believe the court would have made the jump from picking the president to assuming the role and powers constitutionally given to the presidency if the conservative justices weren’t already sure that the people were too weak to stop them. But the conservatives were sure they could get away with today’s ruling because they already got away with a different case two years ago: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization." #SCOTUS thenation.com/article/society/…

First post here on #pixelfed !

I'm going to slowly start posting my past, present and future artwork here, starting with my sculpt of Pot Boy from Elden Ring, made entirely in Blender.

A little bit about myself: I'm a 24 year old 3D artist from Austria, working mainly with ZBrush and Blender, focusing mainly on Characters and Creatures. I also have a website where I sometimes post Blogs and other artwork 😀

I have a painting in the Victorian Artist Society's Portrait Exhibition 2024! It's of my friend Thuan! (The least self-conscious person I could find...Thank you so much, Thuan!)

The opening event will be on Sunday 07 July. If you happen to be in Australia, you can come along and see my painting--and everyone else's of course. You can enjoy the open day to observe how various portrait artists ply their craft!

The painting will then continue to be up until 15 July. So, you can pop by any time that week. Let me know and I will join you for a squizz and a cup of tea from the VAS barista!

I like the shape it's very nice looking but also perhaps a little moldy? Unless that's some brilliant and idiosyncratic glaze work.

From popular note-taking apps 🗒️ like Joplin to open-source mobile OSes📱, @alternativeto recommends a list of apps that integrate with your Nextcloud:

But not all of them *do* integrate with Nextcloud. Do you do any factual review before amplifying social media content?

Congratulations to a Faculty Committee at the University of Rhode Island for calling for the closure of the university's #OpenAccess Fund which supports APCs. The Committee argues that "rather than covering APC expenses of a small number of URI faculty, OA Fund resources should be redirected toward efforts that will have greater impact."

These actions align with the #BOAI20 Recommendations to move away from APCs.
