I had a couple of pieces of langos dough left over last night so this morning I made fried apple turnovers and had one with homemade icecream for breakfast.

in reply to Max, overwintering bug

It's very important to recognize the border between scientific questions and moral decisions. Something people often make quite blurry !
in reply to Max, overwintering bug

yes! It reminds me of an important quote from Boronwski in Science and Human Values "Those who think that science is ethically neutral confuse the findings of science, which are, with the activity of science, which is not." With the understanding that the findings come from the activity, science has always held and expressed the assumptions of it's practitioners. I believe blurring the line happens from ignorance or as part of a rhetorical strategy that I am wary of.

Biscuits! A variation on Anzac biscuits. These have added hazelnuts and mixed peel, some scotch whisky and a slightly different process (did not melt the butter, or activate the baking soda with said melted butter and syrup - which always seemed to me to be showy without actual purpose).

straight up use the whisky. Presumably the alcohol mostly evaporates off while baking. Nice slightly smokey hint in the flavour to complement the citrus.

Autofocus glasses!
What with the inexorable march of time etc, I find it harder to change focus from near to far.
These glasses have refocusable lenses (from some horrible cheap dial-eye specs), a couple of little linear servos to drive them, and a couple of endoscope camera modules to track my eyes.
The focus is adjusted based on where my eyes are converging.

would be nice to have captions on these images. folks pride mastodon as being better for folks on screen readers and I think its a laudable effort. Also I've been told that putting hashtags in camel case is also screen reader friendly.

Since I use it for live music and want the extra stability, I got one with a housing on it.

PSA: If you'd prefer not to see retweets and crossposts from Twitter, you can go to your Settings (Cog icon) and then select Filters

Add a filter for @twitter.com and you'll never seen them again (well until you remove the filter that is).

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

I believe if you use a mobile client you may need to do this on a PC browser but otherwise solid tip thank you (will do when I get back to mine)
in reply to Ep. 2 OUT NOW!!!

depends on the mobile app being used, but it can be done in the “official” app.

Click your profile, then the cog, then scroll down to Account Settings, then when that loads, the three bar menu, then Filters.

Phew!

I'm on Tusky but you're right! Did not see there were both "preferences" AND Account preferences and there's the option! Thanks for the correction, the option is indeed there 👍

But also, if we wanted to read Twitter content, we’d be on Twitter.

I've had conversations with a bunch of people today who were asking for help with various masto/fedi stuff, in Spanish. They all thought I could speak Spanish.

I used deepl.com/translator. It's really freakin' good.

I've been seeing a lot of the German users popping up on the photography tag - I don't see the Chinese ones, I guess they're using Chinese hashtags 😮

Hello Mastodon art people! I’m Julia, an illustrator and naturalist from Germany. I’ve quit all social media a few years ago because addictive algorithms, ads, infinite scrolling and tracking surveillance were killing my creativity.
Mastodon is likely the last social media experiment I’ll try. Here are some birds for you, because although I’ve left Twitter, I love drawing birds.

I know, it's hard to completely evade those companies, they do have some very practical tools (I also still have some ties to Google).
I still remember how the internet felt back in the late 90s, I'd love to get that back. As you say - peace of mind. Maybe this place can mimic that a bit.

"Shadows of Forbidden Gods" sounds like it will be extremely my jam, so I tried it out last night. It's an Early Access turn-based strategy game in which you play a (slowly-waking) dark god whose Agents are working to corrupt the human world. store.steampowered.com/app/174…

You move the Agents around a hex-based map containing farms/villages/cities and command them to incite unrest, disrupt food production, cause strife between nobles, and set up Wells of Shadow, which spread corruption.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

Most of the important actions took a long time (13-20 turns), which was partly a result of me not focusing my skill points correctly, but partly also just the challenge of the game.

Every 10 turns, an Event happens that typically sets back the work of one of your Agents by a couplefew turns. That's rough on a 20-turn action. That extra time lets Heroes catch up to you to attack, or for rulers to notice you and put anti-Shadow shields up that undo your work.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

There are some things that are still a little rough in the UI right now. Clicking to select Agents on the board actually selected the adjacent hex half the time. The autosave process unselects what you're in and changes the zoom. Sometimes when I hit "space" to end my turn, I actually changed the action my Agent was doing. 😒 Some additional clarity around where I can use certain agent actions would be nice, too.

All of that said, I'm 1000% going to keep trying this game. 🤩

Cool. It's a pretty bleak view of the future, but I can appreciate cautionary tales. I recommended it to my friend because it's a post-oil world that has failed to rectify the imbalances of power that impede a great human flourishing. a technical image question:

I want to enhance the resolution of this image... This is the best quality the programme that (scientifically) generated the image will produce, but I need it to look ok as a 5 ft square on a giant screen. I've tried in photoshop but then the resulting image in HitFilmExpress is gigantic, even though I set it to be the same 11.48cm.

I'm sure if you know this stuff it's obvious... i'm just figuring it all out as I go... (I have 60 to do) #asking #image #editing

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

my original files are as .bmp

does that mean I can clean them up a bit so they are 72-96 dpi? It is slightly more complex than having it just as an image - all the 60 images are involved in a 15 min film, and they change size... I don't mind about the main boundaries being pixilated, I think I just want to smooth the insides. They are images of patterns of sand on metal plates and they are generated to be on a 434mm plate... so they are by nature small to start with.

in reply to Laura Ritchie 🌸

So if you are resizing in photoshop, in the resize box, change the DPI to 72, and then set the longest edge size to 1920px
That *should* display ok.

You can choose Bicubic (smooth) to try to smooth some of the enlargement artifacts.

Using the image from your post, the resulting file size comparison was:

409,972kb original.png
667,503kb enlarged.png

So here's a question: Why did so many writers leave @medium a.k.a. medium.com?

I took a long breather. I did it because I was sick of the "5 Ways to..." headlines I kept being directed to. BUT, I am trying again. And am saddened to see so many of the writers I used to follow and interact with ... gone.

Why? Where are they?

Unknown parent

Geoffrey Gevalt
I suspect it is for the same reasons I took such a long pause.... The ""5 ways to..." stories, the constant changing of mission, elimination of features, addition of clunker features, mistreatment of writers and magazines, mistreatment of its workers.... But I have returned. I want to give it one last go to see who is really doing great work there.

Today’s update of the “Official” Mastodon app now includes the local timeline.

However, it is a bit hidden. If you’re using that app, press the magnifying glass icon, then scroll the tabs at the top to the right and click on Community.

the federated timeline is still missing from the app. Most third party apps support it through.

Anyone know much about masto's image compression?

See mastodon.art/@tiarael/10821985… and compare that image and the one in the reply in the insta link

in reply to Calligrafae

Hmm, not sure. Definitely the masto image seems to have less contrast, colours are less punchy. But the image is physically larger too (comparing side by side on the same browser).

I reforged the rails to hold the long forge & they are now quite secure.

There’s a few things I need to do to the forge to improve performance, not the least of which is to seal the ends.

Despite that, I attempted to heat treat the cutlass blade. It wasn’t quite as even as I’d have liked but I think it was close enough for something that will never see combat. Seemed to be around 55HRC when done.

I then finished grinding the blade, & slice both my hands (minor) in the process. #blacksmith

If you weren't aware, astronomers don't have a great relationship with Musk. A big issue for us is the Starlink satellites, which due to their low altitude and high number, already regularly interfere with ground-based observations. #starlinked on Twitter has endless examples.

We get told it's the "price of progress" and that SpaceX will make space telescopes cheap anyway. But that's BS: development of advanced space tech is much more expensive than the launch.

vox.com/science-and-health/223…

in reply to Daniel Thorngren

This is less of an issue with Starlink per se, and more a failure of Govt's the world over in providing ubiquitous , fast terrestrial broadband.

Musk just happened to step in and fill a void with tech that does that globally with the minimal fuss (astronomy not withstanding).

As someone who was left behind in the ground based broadband market, I took starlink as the better-than-nothing option.

Okay, it's time to tell new users a secret about Mastodon.

Mastodon is (whispers) part of a much bigger network 😮

Mastodon servers use an open standard called ActivityPub to talk to each other. That's how you interact with people on other Mastodon servers.

But, dozens of other federated networks also use ActivityPub, so (this is the good bit!) you can follow people on these other networks from your Mastodon account!

For example:

PixelFed (pixelfed.org) is a photo sharing network, here's a random example account @Iancylkowski

PeerTube (joinpeertube.org) is a video sharing network, with a p2p system that allows videos to go viral even on small servers, here's a random account @craftykat

BookWyrm (joinbookwyrm.com) is a social reading site, an open alternative to Amazon's Goodreads, here's a random account @mouse

Together, Mastodon and these other services form... The Fediverse <img class=" title=":fediverse:"/>

(whispers) Click on the link...

framatube.org/w/4294a720-f263-…

in reply to FediTips has moved!

The link you just clicked on leads to a video on PeerTube, on a server called framatube.org.

BUT... if you copy and paste the same address of the video into the search box in Mastodon, and search for that link within Mastodon, it will appear to you as a Mastodon post :blobwizard:

You'll then be able to watch it (of course), but also you'll be able to comment on the video by replying to the post within Mastodon, like the video by favouriting it, and follow its creator by following the account that posted it.

This is the Fediverse in action, totally different services interacting through a common open standard.

It can be hard to get your head round this at first, but it's incredibly useful and once you get used to it simply how things should be.

in reply to FediTips has moved!

Yup! Try it out!

For more than two years, since the pandemic began, a small group of us from around the U.S. have been writing together every week. Here's what emerged from last night's session (after some edits) off the prompt, "What are you afraid of?"
medium.com/illumination/on-a-s…

Introduction: I do not know or understand mastodon, but I am curious to give it a shot. Let's see how this pans out and whether it can lure me from twitterverse.
in reply to Andrzej Wąsowski (moved away)

I can definitely understand the sentiment!

Then it really depends on what you are looking for in a social network.

From my 1-week experience here, I find that here it feels easier and more welcoming to have deeper conversations about different topics with other people.

On the other hand, on twitter it seems easier to "broadcast" things that I want as many people as possible be aware of (CFPs, events, etc).

in reply to Claus Aranha

Welcome, @AndrzejWasowski I also share @caranha 's notion that Twitter is better for "broadcasting". But I'd like to add that I think that's the feature of the large network size, their algorithm (which may have questionable implications), and the way users treat the platform. There should be no reason why a "broadcast" couldn't work here but I think the success of that action would require consent of user and admins across the federation. Both networks require the attention of users to thrive.

Lo, thar be cookies on this site to keep track of your login. By clicking 'okay', you are CONSENTING to this.
