For anyone else going down the whole "how does #mastodon and the #fediverse work" rabbit hole...

This tutorial showing how messages are sent provides a great starting point: blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/06/…

And, to go deeper on the full spec see: activitypub.rocks/

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Do people not look at the comments for 5 seconds to check if something hasn't been pointed out 50 times before posting one themselves? I'm really not sure how this is even happening.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I like how one person just found 1 out of all the comments to reply with "I came here to comment this"

in reply to Muse

You are quite right @Tess. We have to work against that, but people have been able to cooperate and create big change before. That doesn't mean it's easy, just doable. That doesn't mean there won't be suffering, but not doing anything will lead to even more suffering.
@Tess

#Introduction to "1-paper-a-day 2022"
After countless conversations that I read too little, I decided to read 1 paper on every workday of 2022 and point to them on SocMedia.

Papers are in the general area of #cognitive + #sensorimotor #neuroscience, including meta-stuff such as #OpenScience.

List of papers so far with links to tweets - toots from now on…
public.3.basecamp.com/p/pHVdbn…

I'm at #133 – doesn’t mean I had lots of vacation but rather that sticking to the plan hasn't been easy ;)

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan will depend somewhat on how diverse the tips are I guess. If too diverse, people will not want to follow..
in reply to HeedLab

yes I agree this is why I say "future filters" because in it's current form the group may scale to become a very messy feed of articles. but maybe with better filtering it will be more useful.

On the topic of writing and Irish-ness, here is a short story that explains, among other things, the origins of that rumor about there being no snakes in Ireland, and why the Land of the Young became separated from ours.
It was an afterword to my first manuscript but it got bumped for word count reasons. See if you can guess who the narrator really is.

I enjoyed that piece immensely, though I had to read it twice -- so many characters!

By the way, I didn't think Tumblr was still alive!

cheers,
geoff

in reply to Geoffrey Gevalt

@GeoffreyGevalt thank you! And yes I fill my chapters with lots of people. It challenges me to give them all unique voices. I think the decision to pull it from the book made sense - too much “newness” in the final chapter is like being served a super-rich desert after a huge meal.

If you're interested in working with #GodotEngine and you might need more than one version installed at one time, I highly recommend Hourglass, which is a custom launcher with a version installer/manager built it. You get all your projects in one place, with versions managed as well. You can also have custom version installs if needed.

I set it up in my menu editor so I can launch it from my launcher (Linux), which is really convenient!

oh I didn't notice, sorry if I offended. Hope I at least pointed to some previously unknown resources, but if not then at least I got a gentle lesson in paying attention to context :BlobCatBlush:

have you read pollution is colonialism? I just finished it a while ago and it has some themes that you seem to be exploring in your dissertation. At least based on the meme 😀

haha I would have interacted in non meme form too, but it sure is fun to digest in the format you presented

We should not be optimising Mastodon so it can handle more people per server. We should be optimising Mastodon so it incentivises more serves with fewer people.

(And if you take that line of thinking to its logical conclusion, you arrive at the idea behind the Small Web: ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-s…)

#decentralisation #federation #fediverse #SmallWeb

in reply to Aral Balkan

Food for thought: The bigger mastodon.social gets, the less successful the #fediverse is.

Sadly, the fundamental design of Mastodon mirrors the design of Big Tech (a server architecture that can support hundreds of thousands of “users”) and thus inherits its success criteria.

I feel it’s time we at least started thinking about what the web would look like if we all had our own place on it and what it would take to get there from here.

Update on the data situation:

I've bought myself a new drive for my home partition and am currently in the process of migrating data over before I lose anymore

in reply to Brodie Robertson

The silver lining is I'm proven very right about splitting out your home and root partitions, this could have been so much worse if they were on the same drive

@nano They do but generally not as a default, you have to go in and build your own table

welcome 👋 it's great to have new folks in the local timeline and introducing themselves to the wider fediverse (or at least masto-verse?) with an introduction

Why, just why. Why Bluesky exists? if Jack Dorsey wants to own social media platform, he already had twitter. Why did he let it go for crypto then come back to create new platform called bsky.app

This remote follow tool looks useful for embedding buttons on websites so people can follow you on the Fediverse github.com/mwt/apfollow
in reply to Doug Belshaw

love the idea but of a follow me button but would not have the faintest idea how to incorporate it in my sites on Squarespace, Substack or Medium… any suggestion for dunderheads like me? 🥸

you're friggin awesome.

Can I ask a favour?

I'm really grateful to be recommended as a follow, but can you also mention the website (fedi.tips) when you do so?

At the moment getting a lot of questions which are answered on the site, and it's difficult to keep up with every question. I'm happy to keep answering, but also afraid I'll miss someone's question.

If they know about the site from the beginning, they will have a chance of finding the answers themselves if I do miss their question.

Thanks 🙏

It originally being called "flesh" makes sense. It's "vlees" in Dutch and "Fleisch" in German. I've always wondered where the word "meat" comes from.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I don't know about the border radius but I like the way that they seperated live streams, shorts and videos.

I would normally unlist my live streams because it would mess up with videos section. Now I am not unlisting anymore.
