Mirror, mirror on the wall, what will concentrate solar energy best of all? In the 1960s @NASAglenn was working to develop systems that provide electrical power in space. One project was a Brayton cycle engine that used a large mirror to collect the sun's rays. Info in ALT text. #NASAhistory
in reply to NASA

This concept continued development up to the late 90s, Space Station Freedom and Mir-2 (and early ISS concepts) were all intended to have solar-dynamic power production in addition to photovoltaics. Rocketdyne even built a test system. But ultimately PV got a lot better, meanwhile ISS became less ambitious, and solar-dynamic turned out harder than expected, so it was dropped early in ISS dev (Russia's Science Power Platform for ISS was the last major proposal using it)

Our next resupply mission to the @Space_Station is scheduled to lift off at 4:19pm ET (2119 UTC) on Monday, Nov. 21. Here's the timeline for @SpaceX's #CRS26 launch—and Friday's prelaunch media briefing: go.nasa.gov/3EgpHW7

Is there a reason the Mastodon Android app has had active development but no release for months? Several fixes plus big new headlining features in Mastodon 4 just aren’t here. Someone opened an issue and it was closed saying it wasn’t the place to ask.

github.com/mastodon/mastodon-a…

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron that's great to know, I like the official Android app, but the lack of updates regarding it while reading so much about the iOS app was worrying me. 😅
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Plz consider writing on the joinmastodon website AND on the android/ios descriptions of the apps to ask people to use the mobile/web site instead of the apps for the time being. We are losing a LOT of new users because the app doesn't work well. Lots of complains about it. Plz tell ppl to use the web for now. It needs to be written on all the pages/sites where the app is available, so people know what to do from the get go, before they get a bad first impression.

Pride Toronto, misdirection of funds, settler-colonialism

It has come to light that #PrideToronto has, at time of publishing, willfully misdirected at least CA$2,850,000 of federal grant money that was meant for #Indigenous #artists. What's more, the various federal agencies who failed to prevent this have been unwilling to hold #PrideTO accountable.

Shout out to Tom Hooper for investigating this and making the results and sources public at pridegrants.ca.

Do I geek out about cool-looking sandstone? You bet. A shallow scouring with my drill’s abrasion bit shows this rock has veins of lighter material inside. Could it hold clues about ancient life? Time for more #SamplingMars. More on “Yori Pass”: go.nasa.gov/3AnIv4Q #PerseveranceRover

I’ve got over a dozen rock cores on board, with many more samples to come. Meanwhile, @nasa and @ESA are preparing the extraction team. Check out the bold plan that would bring these samples safely back to Earth in the early 2030s. mars.nasa.gov/msr #PerseveranceRover

Our Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator, or #LOFTID, launched on Nov. 10, to demonstrate inflatable heat shield technology that could be key to landing humans on Mars. Early results indicate our test was a success! Find out more: go.nasa.gov/3gcmajG #NASATechnology

Made a simple #breakout #PCB for the #UVC #led I found on Amazon, with ample room to add #filtering #circuitry and #current limiters later. The part is way too small to hand solder without experience so a cheap #PCBWay breakout is in order. Arriving Monday. Gotta love a quiet evening #tinkering 😀

🌱 My Neighbor Mastodon

Just want to say thanks for the 15K followers. It's amazing how calming it can be for me as an artist to know that my biggest audience is on the Fediverse right now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who contributed to this.

Hello new people! 👋

I run a human-curated directory of interesting accounts to follow on here:

➡️ fedi.directory

Do you have an account that posts a lot about a particular topic? Would you like to be listed in the directory?

If so, @ me or send me a DM and let me know!

(The site only went live a few days ago so some topics are less populated than others, but this is why I am working on expanding it!)

Boosts appreciated :blobcat:

Regarding the Master Rolodex idea you are implementing: I would like to be listed (this account obviously) at the "dogs" section for starters but your DM seemed to be locked. Here is the category I would like to be listed for starters fedi.directory/tag/dogs/

great initiative, thank you!

I post about politics and specifically international relations/foreign policy/diplomacy, especially European. I also often write about Scotland and the UK.

"This is a whole new chapter in astronomy." Webb researchers found 2 early galaxies, one of which may contain the most distant starlight ever seen. These 2 unexpectedly bright galaxies could fundamentally alter what we know about the very first stars: go.nasa.gov/3XdhoDa #JamesWebb

Ah, yes, the eyes at the belly of the universe. I am loving the results of the JWST so very much.

PS -- No one ever answered me about why so many astronauts have such square jawlines. Ed Harris or John Travolta could play most of them, I think. 😎

While the algorithms of other social media platforms push users to see feeds that push them deeper in their own bubble, mastodon users are self-herding within servers that show local feeds (as one option). #MedTwitter existed across the entire platform. #MedMastodon is over 70% happening within med-mastodon.com

Community of interest or more segregated from other audiences?

in reply to Ken Deutsch

I think it depends on the use cases for #MedMastodon. IMO communication among peers can be done by looking at the local timeline and ensuring peers outside the instance are being followed. Hashtags (on the other hand) are good for allowing folks across multiple instances to participate even if they follow noone. I think the size of the fediverse can make hashtags not good for ongoing discussions as thread of conversation become lost in folks "broadcasting".
