Hello Fediverse!
I'm sharing a thing that I hope can be the beginning for many conversations, and represents for me a statement that is the result of many years of conversation:
I call it the #SlocanStatement, and I'm sharing it here first, in public, in the spirit of the Fediverse.
I hope you'll read it, share it if you think it's a valuable statement, and comment and revise it towards building consensus across the Fediverse.
Live coding: a user's manual is out this week, published open access by MIT Press. I have my copy already, after many years it's real!
I just put up a placeholder website, and will upload the pdf, epub and mobi ebook files there on Tuesday, maybe making a web version. It'd be interesting if people started contributing edits, adding extra chapters etc..

"While data- infrastructures capture public data-streams, they also capture imagination for what a public is, and what is in its interest. We urgently need other imaginations for how we interface with infrastructures, beyond delivering a “solution” to a “need” (or the promise they can fulfill a future need)."

Just noticed that the Mastodon Web UI is using the "translate" CSS class on Content Warnings? Bug, or just some hacky class re-use?
(I was trying to write a userscript to hide the CW section entirely when auto-expand is enabled)
Stars can make beautiful patterns as they age -- sometimes similar to flowers or insects. NGC 6302, the Butterfly Nebula, is a notable example. Though its gaseous wingspan covers over 3 light-years and its estimated surface temperature exceeds 200,000 degrees C, the aging central star of NGC 6302, the featured planetary nebula, has become exceptionally hot.

@Deb Zaccaro-Rojas No idea. Mind you, we had a cat with large feet. He grew up to be an ordinary size for his breed, but with BIG feet.

This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.
We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche.

@anildash It was a mistake, the official Masto dot social Twitter explained in the answers to Chou's Tweet. twitter.com/triketora/status/1…
Eugen also messaged me to tell me that her post was flagged as antisemitic and a moderator mistakenly agreed with the report. Eugen had to actually go into the dot social database to restore the post manually after he was aprised of the situation, which I think caught his attention because it got a lot of eyeballs on it.
