Hey, finally 😂

I mean if I change chart's time to last week I will see gain of 0.95% but hey, I'm still happy it did not jump much and let's hope it FUCKING stay at that rate

A minor asteroid trail is visible as four streaks of light separated by small gaps. These streaks of light represent the four separate exposures that were combined to create this image. The small gaps between each observation reflect filter changes inside @NASAHubble.

CNET and no doubt others to follow turning into AI content farming sites.

theverge.com/2023/1/19/2356296…

Just one in the list of reasons why I get bumped lower repeatedly in search engines, on top of content scrapers and others just ripping me off. It’s a growing problem, the AI side is especially concerning and one day sites like mine simply won’t exist I fear.

When Twitter started burning a bunch of folks were tossing links to their newsletters and my first thought was "It feels like giving myself homework to sign up for an inbox clogging amount of newsletters. What if I just want to casually interact with you in a shared space, not get a broadcast-only concentrated form of you once a month or whatever."
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I've been thinking about this kinda stuff a lot lately. I feel like everyone and their brother are going to be generating tons of articles/blog posts with ai thinking they're a genius and that they found the next get rich quick scheme. I'm afraid all that's going to happen is the Internet is just going to be absolutely spammed with shitty chatgpt generated stories and it's going to wreck the place. I feel you 100% and I hope this stuff doesn't ruin it for actual creators like you

It’s been a good year for right to repair advocates. Colorado passed an important law to allow wheelchair users access to resources they need to fix their own chairs. The Federal Trade Commission has stepped up enforcement of companies that limit the right to repair. And New York made history by passing the first broad consumer right to repair legislation at the end of 2022, requiring some digital electronics manufacturers to provide access to parts, tools, and information necessary for repairing their products.

Hey, how are the Voyagers doing? I know you have a website for them - been there a LOT, but they're lonely out there in deep space and need some attention.

The first pic is from my iPad which are the number of notifications that appeared overnight. The second pic from my iPhone are the notifications that have appeared since Thursday morning just before all the stuff went down.

Don't worry, I'm going to open the app on my iPhone soon so it resets the count and I stop obsessing about this. lol

A survey about what pronoun to use for someone of unknown gender conducted both in 2007 and 2023 shows how much usage has changed in that time. "Their" increased from 32% to 68% while "his" declined from 25% to 3%. zirk.us/@grammargirl/109718763…
in reply to kottke.org

some languages “their” is the default pronoun regardless of known gender or not. So I’m guessing this has more to do with globalization and internet being international. My first language isn’t English and I didn’t realize until the recent brouhahas that I’ve always mostly used “their”. And I’ve been in the US since I was a teenager (but didn’t go to school here).

Never done a proper #introduction since opening my #Mastodon account in early October so here we go

I'm an ecologist based in Berlin and I currently work on #lightpollution & its effects on #insects. I have also worked on a range of other topics in #ecology like #foodwebs & #invasivespecies

I'm also an editorial board member at the journal Oikos & a working group speaker for science communication at the Leibniz Postdoc Network

Looking forward to expand my #Mastodon community in 2023

A friend is a small business artist. She designed a pin that she sells on etsy. The pin design is now being sold by a makeup company for the band Evanescence. Any artists have suggestions of how she should move forward? Her design vs the "new" pin below. My friend's design is the one from etsy.

Happy birthday to Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier (1758 – 1836) who worked closely with her husband Antoine in the lab, modernizing and quantifying #chemistry and the scientific method, recognized and named oxygen and hydrogen, explained the role that oxygen plays in combustion, helped modernize chemical nomenclature and discovered that mass is conserved in chemical reactions. Traditionally Antoine has been called the "father of modern chemistry" (with little to no mention of his wife)

“The #fediverse is like #email.”

Yes.

Now read this and understand it:

“I have been self-hosting my email since I got my first broadband connection at home in 1999 … But my emails are just not delivered anymore. I might as well not have an email server.

Email is now an oligopoly, a service gatekept by a few big companies which does not follow the principles of net neutrality … I lost. We lost. One cannot reliably deploy independent email servers.“
