I’ve been in #NYC for over 20 years and had no idea there was a “Sniffen Court” … it looks and sounds right out of a fantasy film. Midblock East 36th in Manhattan. Originally stables for the wealthy houses around this area. #Architecture #Landmarks

close enough to my office that I’m scandalised I don’t know anything about this. Will check it out.

thanks for the shoutout on stardust! There's a lot more going on (like demo videos shown @stardustxr) but the description is just to explain what it is to other devs who could help so it's not the best for a video.

You can test Stardust even without a headset using its flatscreen mode, that's how I code it most of the time since the hardware's not quite there yet. If you want to, def reach out to me next time! I could have made the whole thing more presentable if I'd known...

This scam relies on the onlooker's ignorance of a key element of the reader/writer ecosystem: readers have finite time for reading, and their time is inelastic.

The very first sentence in the pitch asserts that it's easy to write a bestselling book (with or without AI assistance). But if that was the case, why isn't everybody doing it already?

Books can't all be bestsellers, because the customers' reading time is inelastic. So they buy on perceived quality. So this is a grift. QED.

An inspiration to countless girls, Dr. Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian descent to go to space, a pilot, and an aerospace engineer. Chawla is pictured here on STS-107 in January 2003, two weeks before she and her crewmates perished during re-entry. #NASARemembers

This album is an absolute banger. Top class talent performing imaginative inspired arrangements with a disregard for genre lines.

Maintaining an positive and uplifting spirit througout the duration, this album is fantastic for getting things done, a pick-me-up, or introspection.

#Introduction
Hello!
I’m a person that makes art. Lately in the form of indie comics. I also make videos about music.
Current events are also of interest, but I’ll just boost that stuff rather than make original posts (mostly).
Here is a good example of one of my ongoing comic strips:

And a drawing I made of Deirdre Beaubeirdre from Everything Everywhere All At Once, that I think came out pretty good.

📝 So you want to make a new JS framework... daverupert.com/2023/01/so-you-…

I dunno. Svelte did it with years of being under the radar, hard work by community members. No VCs in sight.
in reply to Wolfr

Svelte is great and, I think, the exception here.

At my new job I just got tasked with building a new public-facing website template for our customers. It was started by an intern last semester and all that exists is the front-end in just HTML.
They don't understand how excited I was to hear there was no framework in place. They said I can use any framework I want to build out the rest of the site, make the database connections, etc.
This is a .NET/VB shop, and I can't wait to show them what can be done with so little.

When games that are live service, or rely heavily on servers get cut off, they should at the very least release the server code so others can continue hosting it.

Stop being afraid of open source and embrace it. Too many games will be lost to greed.

Duelyst is a wonderful recent example of how to do it right.

just take all the source ports of DooM, Quake 1, 2 and 3 and rebase them on the Unreal engine 1.

Jokes aside we owe a lot to John Carmack.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

An obligation to disclose APIs (and source code after service-shutdown) would also make sense for other applications than games.
I would even go so far as to say that APIs to end users must always be disclosed. Control can still take place via access rights.
Imagine if appliance power plugs depended on the power provider: Coffee machines would come in 'umpteen different plugs, depending on the electricity provider. Crazy! But normal for IT...

The star closest to our Sun, Proxima Centauri, also hosts the closest exoplanet to Earth, only 4.2 light-years away. The small star is hard to see, but now there's more reason to look! A possible second planet, Proxima Centauri c, is awaiting confirmation!

beautiful. a useful distance measure would be how long it would take to get there accelerating at 1g for half the distance and decelerating at 1g for the other half. A practical method to maintain gravity on board. Unfortunately I’m far to lazy to try to work it out.
in reply to NASA

Will we ever get a picture of the planets we are finding? That would be cool.

✨🔭 The night sky is rapidly getting brighter

Artificial lighting that escapes into the sky causes it to glow, preventing humans and animals from seeing the #stars. Citizen scientists reported global rapid reductions in the visibility of stars. Trends in the data showed that the average night sky got brighter by 9.6% per year from 2011 to 2022, which is equivalent to doubling the sky brightness every 8 years.

City girl here, went camping recently in the Manzano Mts of NM and omg, couldn’t get enough of that sky! At about 8K ft during a low light moon phase; what a stunner. I slept in the hammock so every time I woke I could stargaze. Magical. ✨ I want more of that.

Installed the birdsite phone-program for the first time in years to do a Spaces thing today. Re-deleted before the day is out. Web is safer. But ugh it is so much nicer here.

How should we clone spaces in the fediverse? Press record on Mumble? And post the address to Mastodon? Can't be that hard.

I went to the @system76 factory in Denver today to get some help replacing a laptop battery, and got a fun glimpse of the new COSMIC DE they're building. Two things:

1. It is so nice to be able to visit a local computer factory and spend an hour geeking out with the people there

2. COSMIC is going to be amazing! See latest updates here: blog.system76.com/post/2022-at…
