Manifesto for posting online in 2023. Liked this bit: “Most people would prefer you to be an indentikit loaf of sliced white supermarket bread, but we know that all of the goodness is in your funky sourdough starter mix.” meandorla.substack.com/p/manif…
in reply to kottke.org

Amen. My sourdough mix is more dorky than funky, but I'm doubling down on it, damn it.

Duke of Portland Boathouse - Ullswater

Another from yesterday. A location that will need another visit as the light/conditions weren't as good as they could be.

I'm glad I got autumn colour though.

We are looking for talented junior scientists to join our International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Two fully-funded 4-year #PhD fellowships (2024-2028) are available to carry out cutting-edge research on #genetics and #development of human #language, with several innovative projects to choose from, co-supervised by leading researchers at the Max Planck Institute and our partners at the Radboud University. Projects include investigating rare #DNA variants in genes that cause developmental speech/language disorders, and neuroimaging #genomic analyses of language circuits in the brain.

Application portal opens Dec 4th 2023 and closes Jan 8th 2024. Full information and FAQ can be found here: mpi.nl/imprs-phd-fellowships-2…

Boosts much appreciated!

@mpi_nl @maxplanckgesellschaft @Radboud_uni

in reply to Simon E. Fisher

Seeking applicants for #PhD projects on #genetics & #language:

1) Deciphering roles of rare genetic variants in developmental speech/language disorders. This project studies impacts of pathogenic gene disruptions by integrating data from clinical & speech/language profiles of affected patients with lab-based analyses in human neuronal models (e.g. brain organoids).

2) Mapping language-relevant genetic effects on brain variability using normative modelling. Here, we apply normative modelling to large-scale imaging & DNA data from the general population, to uncover heterogeneous effects of language-relevant genetic variants.

3) Genetic architecture of the human language network. In this project, we employ advanced neuroimaging techniques to map neural circuits involved in language processing, characterize interindividual differences in their properties, & associate them with DNA variation in unique cohorts.

Applications due before Jan 8th 2024. More info here: mpi.nl/imprs-phd-fellowships-2…

I'm excited that @theintercept's website now lets authors specify their Signal phone number and their Mastodon and Bluesky account at the bottom of every article!

The Intercept authors can also now verify themselves on Mastodon by linking to their author bio in their metadata.

We’re all here making fresh designs and Photoshop just casually has a UI that’s unchanged for a quarter of a century.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Agreed. I've always preferred apps that stick to the OS appearance.

I think there's something to be said for long-term UI patterns. I've been using Affinity a lot, and much of the confusion I'm having comes from (1) UIs that are similar to Photoshop's but do different things, or (2) UIs that are different from Photoshop but do the same thing.

The fundamentals of desktop GUIs—windows, File/Edit menus—haven't changed in close to 40 years.

Steam Autumn Sale 2023 is live with huge savings gamingonlinux.com/2023/11/stea…
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Original Half-Life is currently for free on Steam. It had some nice updates too.
Also The Sims 4 My First Pet Stuff Pack is for free on EA App. 😉

I'm a little confused here. The Talos Principle 2 is on top of my wishlist, and I almost instantly bought it when the -51% notification popped up. But that game was never a 57.98€ title to begin with, was it?

Edit: must be a bug (or a very questionable marketing trick). In a bundle with TTP1, which is 95% off, you could indeed state that the total discount is 51%... but you'd still pay full price for TTP2

I’m so looking forward to Hayao Miyazaki’s last(?) film, ‘The Boy and The Heron.’

The new Ghibli movie debuts Dec 4 & sounds wonderful, imaginative & timely. nytimes.com/2023/11/21/movies/… #Anime #Art This is a #GiftLink

I’m so excited. My partner and I both have been fans and grew up watching Ghibli and Miyazaki films. I loved how he animated a caterpillar, on the documentary when he was trying to work with cg teams. Just blows my mind.
Plus the music is magical. So special to me.

I’m also hopefully going to see yuri if it ever comes out movie or season 2, have you seen season 1?

Crowdfunding rent for a community lab :boost_requested: 🦠 :scihub:

Hello, so I'm coming to the end of my time as the main volunteer organizer for #Biotech Without Borders (a 501(c)(3) in the USA and an all-volunteer member-led #community biolab, aka #makerspace for molecular #biology). I'm reaching out to ask for #donations to keep our #lab running in 2024. We want to be entirely supported by memberships but its' taking time to find our people. opencollective.com/bwob2024

Please boost.

Danny (he/they) reshared this.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

Crowdfunding for community lab: my story
Something that I learned in all this is that there is a whole career's worth of work embedded in articulating for folks what the value of shared lab space could be. A better job needs to be done in proactively reaching out to marginalized communities to help folks understand how low-cost lab access can help nurture opportunities for them and to have those voices represented in the design of programming in community biolab spaces.
in reply to Danny (he/they)

I still see the value of community labs as working with folks that are attracted to the lab to build the internal capacity to manage a third space. A space that has the equipment to do bioart, gather proof-of-concept data, explore low-cost/frugal methods, and experience how scientific benchwork is highly related to kitchen work. Being a part of such a space can expand our imagination of what is possible and challenge us to develop new models for using benchwork in service of our communities.

Valve gives Steam a nice upgrade for controller-friendly games gamingonlinux.com/2023/11/valv…

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I am actually surprised they know how many times players used a controller to play games on Steam.

It does kind of make me wonder what other metrics they track... 😐

@ProfessorCode Not sure why that's surprising, most games go through their API, they track tons about what players do

How many #species are there on Earth? Projections have ranged from the millions to the trillions.

This Perspective looks at how a 2011 #PLOSBiology study transformed this field and what still needs to be done to find a definitive answer.

plos.io/3QRppvc

in reply to PLOS Biology

What needs to be done, clearly I am not biased, is to fund more studies in entomology, and to open and expand entire new undergraduate and graduate schools dedicated to invertebrates, with emphasis on insects.

Sadly, "Soon, we may not be estimating how many species there are on Earth. We will be estimating how many there were."

#EcosystemCollapse #biodiversity

in reply to Albert Cardona

clearly I am not biased, but I think we need to focus more on microbial diversity. Every time an animal or plant species goes extinct I wonder how many microbial symbionts went with it.
