why are there so many books on using these pre-made engines? I want to learn how to make my own engine, but I'm having a hard time finding any resources like those.

The amazing value of the eLife Assessment, demonstrated:

"The fascinating role of neuropeptide Bursicon and its receptor in shaping insect seasonal polyphenism", by Zhang et al. 2024
elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre…

"This *important* study shows that low temperature activates the bursicon signaling pathway during the transition from the summer to the winter form and that it affects cuticle pigment and chitin content, and cuticle thickness."

"The study's *solid* set of experiments and results reveal a role of bursicon signaling in regulating features of polyphenism related to the exoskeleton. Nevertheless, they only *incompletely* substantiate the authors' claims about the regulation of polyphenism itself."

In which other journal would a reader get such a valuable reviewer comment like this, right away? Only at @eLife ! ELife's Assessment for the win.

+1 reason why you must stop using Chrome and, if possible, Chromium browsers

(Upd: link to a post in Fediverse with tech details fedi.simonwillison.net/@simon/…)

(Upd 2: MS Edge seems to have this issue; #Vivaldi also has it but it can be disabled; Ungoogled Chromium doesn't have it at all)

It turns out Google Chrome ships a default, hidden extension that allows code on `*.google.com` access to private APIs, including your current CPU usage

You can test it out by pasting the following into your Chrome DevTools console on any Google page:

chrome.runtime.sendMessage(
"nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome",
{ method: "cpu.getInfo" },
(response) => {
console.log(JSON.stringify(response, null, 2));
},
);

yeah, no, nothing, you cant say 8gb of ram with 8gb of swap is "16gb of ram", thats obvious misinformation and false/misleading advertising.

The curse of moving to Australia with a US accent: all the people who will lecture at you about US politics! I remember when another US immigrant friend was with me as somebody decided to tell us how the US works. She rolled her eyes. I started to laugh. The fellow looked a little cross, but was undeterred! (catch a hint)
in reply to Muse

"I am not so sure that Australians understand their own politics all that well." Like many places, we do indeed have people here with that problem.

a real hell - like the social networks... 😀

Linux Couldn't Have Happened Without This Other Man #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/NWR7iFt4C38
in reply to Brodie Robertson

>GNU's importance is lowered to merely be the "GNU tooling", which is only one part of GNU and then only later raised.
Hurd development started early 1991 once the licensing issues with Mach were resolved - so I don't see where he got "years" from.
>Mentions that there could have been all pure 100% GNU/Freedom if Linux didn't exist, but calls that "FOSS".
Nothing from MINIX was actually used in the kernel, Linux - I don't even think it even had an influence on its design - Linus happen to have used MINIX until he got sick of its design and decided to start writing his own OS, but only ever ended up writing the kernel.
>We haven't seen any major ME vulnerabilities
Aside from all the major ones intel has succeeded in covering up.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki HURD development got started in 1986 but Stallman didn't want to base it off of BSD so that got scrapped to build off of Mach instead
