Goverlay for managing tools like MangoHud gets a major new release and it's finally on Flathub gamingonlinux.com/2026/01/gove…

in reply to dtanzer

It's also not necessarily a good thing. There is a reason people over here are called luddites at times.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I can't speak for @mitsuhiko of course, but for me it's not a bad thing, but also not necessarily a good thing (again - see above 😉 ).

But in this case, I think there is not a big case against waiting for the hype to calm down: Those tools are very easy to learn, and *everyone* is winging it right now anyway.

in reply to dtanzer

@dtanzer @Gargron I happen to think that there is very strong case to make that it's a bad idea to wait for the hype to calm down, particularly for politicians and decision makers. Late movers will be punished in this space. Particularly for us Europeans we will become hyper dependent on other countries and it will become close to impossible for us to compete over time, particularly if the foundation labs decide to close the door behind themselves through the legal systems.
in reply to Armin Ronacher

@dtanzer @Gargron Politicians and policy makers absolutely shouldn't be late movers.

They need to get on top of things and legislature appropriately before the shit hits the fan and the LLM companies shrug and say either "we told you we didn't guarantee anything" or "externalities like society and the environment aren't our problem when we're making investors money in the short term".

That's not the same as "they need to listen to the hype from the companies selling it and throw all of their support and national investment behind it with a blank cheque to do what they want".

in reply to Armin Ronacher

@ibboard @dtanzer This technology has yet to prove it has any benefits (beyond the "vibes" of the people pushing it). So far it's been forcefully added into most products against the wishes of the users, to prop up a speculative stock market--that's not a sign that it's a desirable technology. And we are only beginning to see the damage it's doing through skill atrophy--that's going to be a long term effect. So no, I don't think we need investments.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @ibboard @dtanzer That's the weirdness of it. All the consumer AI slop is completely off-putting, but what coding agents are capable of is on a completely different level. It's going to move labor massively towards capital sadly and more worrying, it's going to move all the gains to the US and China and away from Europe. No machine will pay taxes here.
in reply to Armin Ronacher

@Gargron @ibboard @dtanzer But aren't the people claiming "good" AI results all using expensive subscription versions? Don't the "AI is good" claims all ultimately boil down to an elitist position of "programming is only accessible to those who can afford it"?
in reply to Paul Moore

@pfmoore @Gargron @ibboard @dtanzer absolutely. I pay 400 USD every month right now. Which is even more the reason why we must take this seriously. I don’t want to end up in a world where the economic upside is captured by large US corporations alone.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @pfmoore @ibboard @dtanzer it’s not at all uncommon these days. There are basically two cohorts now, those who create by coding, and those who create by orchestrating systems that output code. If it helps, for them, it’s a bit like having interpreted languages where 99% of users have no idea what the actual assembly code looks like. Paying for that abstraction provides value to these users.

@Gargron @dtanzer I thought it's become a common knowledge that Luddites were a workers' rights movement, not an anti-tech one.

The EU has floated something interesting...

holy clickbait. It's not a plan, it's a proposal that is yet to take place

I'm glad that you started boosting instead of creating new posts with the same links.

This idea is promising and I hope it benefits both the EU and the FLOSS ecosystem.

Do you want to learn more about Linus Torvalds' new vibe-coded tool?

itsfoss.com/news/linus-torvald…

#linux #vibecoding #ai

in reply to It's FOSS

Yeah but Linus Torvalds can code, so he'll know when it fucks up and he can fix it.

AI for coding is like using an air fryer in the kitchen. People who use an air fryer and think it's amazing can't cook.

in reply to It's FOSS

Misleading title. It's not a "vibe-coded tool". It's a personal side project where he is experimenting with one aspect of the project - namely the Python audio visualizer - being "vibe-coded". When I'm at Linus' level of accomplishment and expertise, I may also experiment with the smallest aspect of a personal side project. When that day comes I hope no one "reports" on it like it's news. Were you paid to publish this "article" by an "AI" company? Is this sponsored content?

This is great news! Hopefully the critical mass is big enough now to motivate developers to finally fix the horrible Bluetooth errors that are killing my Linux experience every day.

Connection errors, random disconnects, forgets set keyboard repeat rate, it is so extremely annoying if your OS does not even allow you to use a keyboard without problems.

We all need to reconsider how our democracies run. How democratic are our current systems really? In Australia a number of our community councils run by citizen assemblies. I would like to see our whole country run at least in part this way.

A comic from 2022. I want to make a distinction between the Democrats who are speaking out forcefully against authoritarianism and those whose overcautious approach enabled the extremist takeover of our institutions. This is about the dangers of unaccountability and kicking the can down the road. As recent elections demonstrate, voting is still extremely important.

“I’m sure we’ll vote our way out of this somehow”

Such touching naivety….

in reply to Jen Sorensen

This kind of cynicism doesn't solve anything, and never can. It's corrosive and infectious, and promotes an atmosphere of despair. There's nothing positive about this. It just tells us, "There's no hope; give up." Where is the hopeful contrast implied in the leading text?

I'm sure you mean better, but this just ruined my day. Maybe I'm just the wrong audience. I find your work depressing, and can't follow any more, I'm sorry.

The fires more than an hour north of us are still of concern. They are still at the stage where they create their own weather. However, people in places like Marysville and Warburton, which are closer to us, are being told they can return to their homes. This comes with a caveat to stay indoors, because the smoke, and most especially that smoke you can't see, is very damaging to health. Winds have turned north, so we will be getting less smoke in Healesville, but it is lingering. Only go out with your mask!

the main reason for choosing a penguin was that penguins never crash from falling down like the other OS did so often. Tux stands for reliability with long uptime without getting up too high in the sky. Its speed in water, sustainability on minimum of living ressources and social behaviour made it perfect for the new OS. Resilience with the cold world around and lot of more parallels
