I'm sure that I've put this up before, but it is relevant to a couple conversations.

in reply to Muse

@Simon J Ashcroft that sounds like something straight out of on olde timey music hall!

I remember hearing about this one music hall singer, perhaps from the Edwardian era, who was taken to court for singing a song that had the lyric, "She sits among the cabbages and peas." This was considered licentious. So, she was fined and told she could no longer sing that particular line. She went back to the music hall and instead sang, "She sits among the cabbages and leeks!"

in reply to Muse

Ooooh, the leeks are so much more innocent than the lewd peas...

"She who cooks beans and peas in the same pot is not hygienic"

😅

oh my fucking god i just realised.

When we did this Thursday night, I was the one on the deck cranking the winch where the view sucks, it's hard on the arms, and you're responsible for somebody else.
in reply to Mike J👹🐀 🤘🏻

it sucks up top too, it's cold and windy, and the mast is ice cold, and you're swinging heavy vice-grips over your head while someone down below is shouting instructions you can't hear.

I wish we had mast steps.

Is there a term for when people spend exponentially more time trying to get an LLM to do a task correctly, than it would have taken to just do the task themselves?

But Obsidian isn't really "free" (as in "free speech") and it's not open source either.

Accidentally stumbled across a fascinating escape hatch from some of the more annoying limits of symbolic rewriting engines, by allowing the count of items in a multiset to be a pointer to the number of some other items in the bag. Tiny change, huge ramifications.

@mia found this beautiful single-fraction implementation of fib(n).

This actually is a pretty critical result in models of computation: indirection is one of the most powerful operators you could add to any counter machine (which is what multiset rewriting's sequential cousin is)!

Once you add indirection, you become able to access arbitrary amounts of memory. Instead of encoding data within the counters like stacks of bits, you instead just reach for another counter that you assume exists. Indirection does require you to have an infinite number of counters, or at least as many as your number type can handle.

If you try to reach for a counter that doesn't exist, you can just fail the rule match. Benefits of guarded computation. 😀

in reply to Haven Prism

yes! and as a side effect it also allows to match on the lack of something, which is a HUGE game changer.

@clarity doubling that, because I don’t get how x^x works in it. To me, x^something is like move/copy operation. So it makes little sense with the same symbol, especially in the denominator. Anything I’m missing? Is my mental model flawed?
in reply to Artyom Bologov

@aartaka @clarity Yeah, it looks funny because it's a concatenative language, but function application happens on an unordered bag, so [a b] and [b a] means the same, application happens in parallel, and is applied at once. Before application, the register values are frozen in time, so x takes the value of y, y the value of x, before the fraction is applied.
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@clarity yeah, the Fibonacci exchange / summing part of numerator I get. But the meaning of x^x in denominator still eludes me. What’s its role?
in reply to Artyom Bologov

@aartaka @clarity []/x^x means "take all x, if any". In terms of traditional procedural languages, it maps to
if bag.x >= bag.x then
next_bag.x = bag.x - bag.x
end
This entry was edited (1 day ago)
in reply to ... and and and and ...

@andnull so basically “remove all x”? But that’s not what happens in the program, because X-es are preserved, aren’t they?

@neauoire @clarity

in reply to Artyom Bologov

@aartaka @andnull @clarity I couldn't have explained it better than and, the numerator contains [x^y], so it's saying take all the Xs with [x^x], and put back as many Xs as there are Ys with [x^y]

Report: Shipping data contradict US claims of blockade success

US Centcom commander Brad Cooper said that “US forces have completely halted economic trade going in & out of Iran by sea.”

cnbc.com/2026/04/15/us-strait-…

But shipping data show that 14 ships on the US sanctions lists crossed the strait, 7 from Iranian ports.

In addition, TankerTrackers said Iran shipped 9m barrels of crude oil since the start of the blockade.

aje.news/060cxq?update=4497654

#USPol #EUPol #Hormuz #USBlockade #news #iranWar .

in reply to DrALJONES

To me it's just a gesture from the US to sell the coming deal to the Americans as something they have forced on Iran. While in reality blockading Iran's import and export doesn't help the US in this deal. 47 fucking years of sanctions on Iran has taught them a few things.

@neauoire I was looking at Neralie and Arvelie and I really like both heh. Question tho: how do you pronounce Neralie timestamps?

The obvious pronunciation for "750:000" would be "at 750 beats". Is that the way you'd say it?
