Anyone else get locked in a mindless scroll sometimes?

I tried to read joinmastodon.org just now, and got held up by the columnar layout. Best to avoid columns. (Also, side-scrolling is the worst!)

Not sure where to direct this, maybe @Gargron ?

Do you have JavaScript disabled? Because it doesn't normally look like that.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Yes, I'm using Privacy Browser from F-Droid, which has Javascript off by default.

It should be possible to get an adaptive layout using just CSS, without the Javascript dependency. Generally that means the layout won't be the same on all devices, and the content is legible for everyone.

(Sorry, I don't mean to be #Techsplaining; I'm somewhat averse to Javascript...)

I know some people making the #TwitterMigration may be missing the quote tweet option, but @Gargron explained the reasoning behind not having it quite well. I was just thinking about this because I saw someone on the other site tweet a very bad take and he got QTed, which led to some piling on. If he hadn’t been QTed, many wouldn’t have seen it. Here I find it a bit easier to just pass that stuff by or not see it at all. Definitely a less reflexive anger-inducing experience

I got back a very nice personal letter and a gloriously beautiful press kit!

Ah, yes, a reply guy explaining to me about why Fedified "isn't bad".

Apparently *anyone* can create an account on the Fediverse. That's ostensibly so problematic that we must centralize that feature -- with Google Forms no less.

And although account verification already exists, we need a self-appointed gatekeeper to authenticate those badges!

This entry was edited (3 years ago)
in reply to Chris Trottier

I don’t see what the problem is, they seem to be using link verification to accomplish this which is kind of neat. Nobody is forced to trust these links. Anyone could start a similar service.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think the whole problem resolves around presenting yourself as a major authority for these verifications. But I may be missing something as I haven't studied the issue properly.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron The problem is that they're trying to establish a centralized authority for account verification.

And yeah, nobody is forced to trust those links -- and I won't.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think this speaks to wider issues which are going to repeat re governance. Servers should be free to decide which services they trust, and requiring a centralised source of truth for anything isn’t compatible with federation. The cause for concern for me would be if anyone operating a service like this starts to pressure code maintainers to integrate their service across all servers and whether governance is strong enough to resist this.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think as long as it sits alongside other types of link, it's fair game. If they got to the point where huge numbers of people look to them as a trusted source, good for them. I don't see it as very different to, say, the Nobel Foundation having a links page where they validated the accounts of Laureates. Or indeed validating if someone owns a Twitter account based on link in bio. As long as we all have options then I don't think one type of validation will eat the others.

Jane Caro passed this along. I agree with her when she calls this a "war against women".

A night of ‘hell’: abortion activists on their ‘inhumane’ detention in DC

"...Two of the women were put together in a cell measuring about four by six feet, including the metal bed frame and toilet. The beds had no mattresses, and a bright overhead light remained on all night, making sleep impossible. Their legs are still streaked with dark bruises from sitting on the two-inch metal lip on the side of the bed. Temperatures hovered around 90F (32C) and there was little water or food. Their repeated requests to contact lawyers went unanswered, they said.

"It was “surreal – just torture, really”, Paterson said, calling it a night of “hell”."
