OpenRazer v3.5.0 adds more device support on Linux gamingonlinux.com/2022/11/open…
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

OpenRazer is great. On the Razer device I have (a mouse) it seems to support every feature the device has. I don't think I actually use any of them though... :blobcatoh:

I just made an new Mastodon instance focused on #neuroscience at synapse.cafe . I'd like this to be a cozy space to discuss the wonders of the brain, from cells to thoughts. If you do research in neuroscience or even have a general interest in it, come by and check it out!

As #Orion makes its closest lunar approach today, 53 years ago the Apollo 12 astronauts were in lunar orbit preparing to head back home! The Yankee Clipper command module performed a trans-Earth injection, leaving lunar orbit #OTD at 3:49 pm ET.

Hello Fediverse!

I'm sharing a thing that I hope can be the beginning for many conversations, and represents for me a statement that is the result of many years of conversation:

slocanstatement.org/

I call it the #SlocanStatement, and I'm sharing it here first, in public, in the spirit of the Fediverse.

I hope you'll read it, share it if you think it's a valuable statement, and comment and revise it towards building consensus across the Fediverse.

in reply to Dr Suzanne she/her

@DrSuzanne there is also the factor that many instances (like ours) cannot view posts from mastodon.social without following thus is can be a bit tricky to expose conversations to them. It seems like the audience you're trying to reach is not folks from other instances though, but rather instance admins (and not just mastodon...) The considerations for making this conversation more widespread thus should focus on these individuals IMO.

Klostės / Folds gets it’s #mexicanpremiere Oaxaca FilmFestival this December. I am over the moon at its success. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this film would travel the world! Thank you to the team Kaunas 2022 for their incredible support with my baby!

Live coding: a user's manual is out this week, published open access by MIT Press. I have my copy already, after many years it's real!

I just put up a placeholder website, and will upload the pdf, epub and mobi ebook files there on Tuesday, maybe making a web version. It'd be interesting if people started contributing edits, adding extra chapters etc..

"While data- infrastructures capture public data-streams, they also capture imagination for what a public is, and what is in its interest. Tooting from @maartje 's Mastodon 3.11 for Workgroups! Though not sure if the parsing weirdness is my poorly setup WebOne or not

The @NASA_Orion spacecraft has performed its first powered lunar flyby.

Orion made its closest approach to the lunar surface during the #Artemis I mission - approximately 80 miles – at 7:57am ET (12:57 UTC).

"Nextcloud is my on-premise cloud platform of choice!

Not only is it open source ✨ but it’s also incredibly flexible, reliable and secure. Nextcloud also includes integration with a full-blown office suite that can easily serve your needs."

techrepublic.com/article/5-alt…

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

Nextcloud is great, I just wish it would treat what are effectively its free beta testers a bit more thoughtfully. An email with the most recent important config changes (both from NC and Collabora) would be most helpful as things break between updates and there is no recourse other than digging through forum and github posts trying to see if anyone else a) has come across the same issue and b) has found a solution - not to mention silent config changes that are not advertised.

For anyone who wants to help lighten the load on a Mastodon instance you're using (and perhaps make things snappier for yourself), consider enabling "slow mode" in your appearance settings.

It should seriously cut back on the number of requests the instance is having to fulfill for your browser.

in reply to Insane Control Message Posse

I'm sorry, this is well-intentioned, but "slow mode" has no effect on the amount of requests your browser makes altogether.

Just noticed that the Mastodon Web UI is using the "translate" CSS class on Content Warnings? Bug, or just some hacky class re-use?

(I was trying to write a userscript to hide the CW section entirely when auto-expand is enabled)

Some browsers or web tools use that class to decide which parts of the page to translate.

The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble
Stars can make beautiful patterns as they age -- sometimes similar to flowers or insects. NGC 6302, the Butterfly Nebula, is a notable example. Though its gaseous wingspan covers over 3 light-years and its estimated surface temperature exceeds 200,000 degrees C, the aging central star of NGC 6302, the featured planetary nebula, has become exceptionally hot.

Hey NASA, this image is so amazing, it would be fantastic if you could add a description in its alt-text, so people with impaired vision could also appreciate it 😃
in reply to NASA

oops looks like you forgot alt text - there’s a handy delete and redraft button where you can add a description so the visually impaired get to know about what’s in the image 😃

This seems like an appropriate first comic for mastodon.

@Deb Zaccaro-Rojas No idea. Mind you, we had a cat with large feet. He grew up to be an ordinary size for his breed, but with BIG feet.

This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting posts removed from mastodon.social because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.

We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

Link to Twitter: twitter.com/triketora/status/1…

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche. :blobcatreeeeeee:

in reply to Gersande La Flèche

do we know yet that this was an intentional choice and not a moderating mistake made by a service that has grown tenfold in the last few weeks?
in reply to Anil

@anildash It was a mistake, the official Masto dot social Twitter explained in the answers to Chou's Tweet. twitter.com/triketora/status/1…

Eugen also messaged me to tell me that her post was flagged as antisemitic and a moderator mistakenly agreed with the report. Eugen had to actually go into the dot social database to restore the post manually after he was aprised of the situation, which I think caught his attention because it got a lot of eyeballs on it.

#OTD in 1969, Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Al Bean walked out to visit the inactive Surveyor 3 spacecraft that had been on the moon since 1967; collecting its TV camera, robotic scoop, and some cables, tubing, and glass for a return to Earth.
