The doomed egg-shaped exoplanet WASP-12b is a hot Jupiter that orbits so close to its parent star, it's being torn apart.Exoplanet Exploration: Planets Beyond our Solar System
does this mean WASP - 12b doesn’t spin on its own axis?
If it is spinning on its own axis, why hasn’t it been pulled equally on all sides?

Has science become less 'disruptive'?
Nature news claimed so earlier this week: nature.com/articles/d41586-022…
The claim is based on a bibliometric study that operationalizes disruptiveness in a particular way: nature.com/articles/s41586-022…
I wouldn't have noticed, but two journalists asked me about it. Some of my comments in a nutshell: 1/n
‘Disruptive’ science has declined — and no one knows why
The proportion of publications that send a field in a new direction has plummeted over the last half-century.Kozlov, Max

How to slow down scientific progress
"Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948."
You can see the full thing at this link, but I've also taken a screenshot of an excerpt. 😬 🤔 😢

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill.
And not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.
I find it comforting to remember that life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not. #science #nature #history #SharedPlanet
To be honest: I don't find that very comforting.
So far, we don't know a thing about evolution of consciousness. It may very well be, that the human species is the only one (in the universe?) "tool of the cosmos to understand itself". (Carl Sagan)
I don't agree that it doesn't matter whether "we're part of it or not".
Today is the last day of 'Púca in the Machine' exhibiting at Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Ireland. This art-research project and exhibition investigated the myth, ecology, technology and more-than-human relationships at the Poulaphuca Reservoir in Wicklow, Ireland.
Three artists collaborated on research and created works in response to the unique place.
2023 will see a second leg of the same project, collecting different perspectives from three new artists.

1. Bc Mastodon is using standard HTML, Zotero is able to recognize any DOIs in your current timeline & import the related works into your Zotero library:
Right-click on the Save to Zotero icon in your browser and select "Save to Zotero (DOI)"
2. Did you know you can add individual Mastodon posts with metadata to Zotero when you're looking at a single post view, e.g. by clicking on the timestamp (the URL will look sth like fediscience.org/@adam42smith/1… )
