Frage zur Funktionalität von Foren für verschiedene Fediverse-Dienste

@Friendica Support

Light from these 3 galaxies traveled up to 13.1 billion years to reach us! The farthest contains only 2% the oxygen found in our Milky Way. @NASAWebb's instruments identified oxygen, hydrogen, and neon, which line up in a stunning resemblance to those seen in nearby green peas.

There's no option to make a post visible to local only?

Is there a way to "mention" a whole server to replicate that?

For things that some communities are fine with but a lot of other communities are very sensitive about or frustrated by. It might be polite to prevent it getting boosted to places that don't want it, by sharing only with communities that allow it.

Or for admin discussions that would be irrelevant to a lot of my followers but relevant to people who don't follow me on my server.

in reply to irtapillarsaurus

No I am talking about hometown. It's downstream of Mastodon and was recently updated to reflect the 4.x changes.
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan

i am very confused, i might need a flow chart.

is this it?

there are different instances / servers
(words used interchangeably by most people)
e.g. scholar.social

They all use a software called mastadon…
Which is open source and modifiable…
But not the thing being modified here?

They also use another piece of software
called hometown
and there are multiple versions / forks of that
(like Darwin's favourite finches)

and some of the hometown finches let you post to local only?

in reply to irtapillarsaurus

i think you're very close to the right interpretation. I was gonna take a stab at your finches analogy cause it sounds fun but it got confusing for me 😛

Fedi is lots of different servers/instances (yes interchangeable term) that run software that conforms to ActivityPub. Eg sauropods.win, write.as, neuromatch.social, anar.chi.st, friend.camp, eldritch.cafe, bookwyrm.social, etc

in reply to Danny (he/they)

Mastodon is one implementation of Activity Pub that is currently driving a lot of growth on fedi. It is open source and so folks are able to fork and modify it.

Some instances modify it in cosmetic ways (CSS) to improve functionality but typically not redistributed and each admin makes their own tweaks. Some instances are running forked versions that have more significant changes to functionality and admins get this modded Mastodon code from some repository.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

Hometown and glitch-soc are forks of Mastodon. When changes are made to Mastodon maintainers of forks have to make decisions on how (if at all) they integrate those changes into their fork. Furthermore, admins (or whoever is managing the installation) must choose when they want to update the instance with a new version (whether it be vanilla or fork).

@danwchan

I definitely need some kind of diagram… any tips on how to find one?

I noticed one server running on Tor… i have no idea whether that's weird?

I'm fairly foggy on what Tor even is? As someone living in a fairly lucky democracy i have only heard of Tor as a way to find drugs. But i imagine it has more honourable uses in places that have genuine free speech problems. e.g. Russians who oppose the war.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan

oh, i forgot we already had a biology analogy.

and i should maybe read my notifications in forwards chronological order?

Over 50,000 years ago, our ancient cousin, Homo floresiensis, lived on the Indonesian island Flores. Popularly referred to as "hobbits,” adults were ~3 ft tall.

Soaring the skies above them, a giant carnivorous bird, Leptoptilos robustus, measured 6 ft tall with a long, sharp beak.

Did they interact? Newspapers around the world have run sensationalized headlines claiming the #birds ate hobbit babies, but scientists just don’t know. Yet. nationalgeographic.com/science… #science #history #SharedPlanet

I mean, if they were around at the same time, they absolutely did. Predators generally don't seem to be too picky. My favorite example is that you can find photos of herons eating alligators and alligators eating herons. But also spiders and praying mantises eating birds, centipedes eating bats, etc.

I wouldn't reckon that humans were a *major* part of their diet, though.

When we elect U.S. Senators & House members to office, we expect them - and by extension, their office staff - to reflect the preferences & attitudes in our district or state. But do they actually know what constituents want?

It’s complicated, but the limited evidence we have so far suggests no.

New post: sheril.substack.com/p/represen… #politics #Congress

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I would suggest that there are a good 40 to 50 years of evidence. Or from whenever gerrymandering started, for that matter.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

They verywell know and promise till the voting is completed. After that they look after there own carrier and politics. Once their term expires and if they are chosen to represent their Constituency again their memory recovers and they promise to serve the Community again!
