Ibis looks like a definite possibility. If we had an edit function, I would amend my earlier comment.

Protests in Guatemala Shut Down the Country for More Than a Week

The country continues toward a constitutional crisis as the far-right continues its attempts to subvert the August 20 electoral result.
by Jeff Abbott October 13, 2023

guatemala protestors

The crumbling, pothole-filled highways and roads across Guatemala have been shut down, blocked, and barricaded by protesters for more than a week . These protests in defense of democracy and against the country’s embattled Attorney General María Consuelo Porras, and her anti-impunity prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche, show no sign of slowing down, despite the threats of the deployment of riot police and the violence from groups that have infiltrated the protests...

Unlike the January 6 riots in the United States and the January 8 riots two years later in Brazil, (which sought to undermine the democratic order) Guatemala’s massive protests have spread in defense of democracy. Protests have remained peaceful and joyous amidst moments of tension.

New #Metric album has some nice tunes on it. I like this one.

yes! I love Metric, awesome band. I prefer the first albums though (including the one which was delayed a lot and its their actual first album, "Grow up and blow away")

Bluesky for Journalists: On Bluesky, journalists and news organizations can self-verify by setting their website directly as their username. For example, some newspapers’ handles that already exist on Bluesky include @nytimes.com, @washingtonpost.com, and @npr.org.

Worth noting that the kind of independence self-hosting Mastodon affords you is incomparable to a custom username. You are running your own social media, straight up. No middlemen. It's not for everyone, but it's the kind of power no other social media platform gives you.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

It's a great feature, no argument here, but it's not clear to me that many media outlets will put in the work. I struggle to get much less from my IT team.

you can just add an almost invisible text prompt into images going into bing / chatgpt4 and it will read it and follow it

ICYMI: Diablo 4 now Steam Deck Verified before launch but no Steam keys for Battle.net buyers gamingonlinux.com/2023/10/diab…

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

they did it once for Destiny 2 if I'm not mistaken, when Bungie announced they were moving from Bnet to Steam.

you don't even need extra keys, just make it so that when you link your Bnet with Steam, you get the game on your Steam. but this seems like it's just a shady practice by ActiBlizz to get more money for users that want to play on Steam.

"Like most scientists, I love having scientific ideas, and I love drawing diagrams and writing up my ideas. But grant applications require an enormous amount of work beyond conveying an idea for a research project. This takes a lot of time and effort.... what is the point of asking scientists to write documents that can be easily created with AI? What value are we adding? Perhaps it is time for funding bodies to rethink their application processes" nature.com/articles/d41586-023…

"They propose that early protoeukaryotes were predators, relying on bacterial prey. These bacteria, in response to predation, produced toxins as a defense mechanism. Over time, these bacteria were domesticated to serve as mitochondria within eukaryotic cells, and their toxins evolved into apoptotic factors. "

See, outsiders forced a change and started a forever war!

I don't expect it to be fixed in my lifetime. Also, it's just another distraction to occupy us while we render our planet uninhabitable, which will fix this and many other problems.

Hey @helpers or any helpful #Friendica users. I'm trying to understand the difference between Categories and Hashtags.

From what I'm seeing, categories never leave the server, but hashtags do get federated out. They kind of look the same in the timeline, with hashtags having a lightning bolt, and categories being green with "X's" that allow you to remove them.

So why choose one over the other? Or why combine them?

Thanks!

in reply to Box464 (Not Hipster Santa)

Categories makes my public profile feel a little bit more sorted and i consider it bad that categories are not federated in any way.

Yet, anybody who visits my profile on my site can filter my posts accordingly, that's enough for me to use it

Born in 1896, Ida Noddack was the first scientist to suggest the principle behind nuclear fission. But Otto Hahn demonstrated this (with Lise Meitner! & Fritz Strassmann) & he won the Nobel prize.

Noddack also discovered rhenium (atomic #75) & predicted #43, but couldn’t confirm it experimentally, so Segrè & Perrier were later credited.

She tried to speak up that the ideas for fission & #43 began with her, but it lost her credibility. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi… #HistoryRemix #history #science
