Squadron 42 finally 'feature complete', CIG talk up Vulkan support for Star Citizen gamingonlinux.com/2023/10/squa…

#Vulkan #PCGaming

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

our org did a big watch party (some of us even hanging out together in a hulouse up in manchester) and... gosh heckie, the whole weekend was made of pure hype - also worth noting that the concept of Linux support is brought up regularly, and with support from the dev team, who also want that to happen 😀
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

is "feature complete" code for "let's create a brand new roadmap so dumb users can just give us their money and we will start a new huge project just to 'justify' this new money request"?

New Blog Alert: Diversity & Inclusion in #ResearchSoftware

urssi.us/blog/2023/10/26/diver…

Some fresh insights from an International Workshop at 2023 IEEE eScience Conference facilitated by the URSSI ‘Charting the course’ project (urssi.us/projects/policy/about…), based at NCSA @ UIUC, and supported by the Sloan Foundation.

The workshop served as a catalyst for a much-needed dialogue about advancing diversity in research software; we've got pieces of a roadmap at this point, albeit with a long way to go.

Here's how to fix METAL GEAR SOLID 2 and 3 on Steam Deck / Linux gamingonlinux.com/2023/10/here…

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

eh, debatable, it's two clicks (select game, select package) if you have protontricks already installed, three if you have to install protontricks first, plus no digging around on the net and hoping you get an official file and not an infected one.

if you play new releases a lot through steam I'd always recommend having protontricks installed though.

Valve released big new Steam desktop, Steam Deck and SteamVR 2.0 updates gamingonlinux.com/2023/10/valv…

#SteamDeck #SteamVR #Steam #Linux

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I just got the new VR update. It completely broke desktop view, I keep getting a boot up error, the black window is still there, and now my library is empty in the VR menu, I have to start the game fom desktop.

And my 6700XT seems to be locked somewhere around 60 fps and I can't figure out why, I can turn my settings all the way down and get the same framerate as when I have auto settings.

I may have to dual boot windows.

Ice Cubes is now available as a proper macOS application! If you had the iOS app installed on your mac, you can remove it and install this one instead.

This is the first version. A lot of macOS-specific features will be added in the future!

T-Mobile customers with older plans (Simple Choice, ONE, Magenta, Magenta 55 Plus) - double check any recent correspondence you may have gotten from T-Mobile. They are helpfully "upgrading" some customers on these plans to newer, more expensive, plans automatically in November *unless you opt out*.

Nominally you were notified about this via SMS or email, but check and, if necessary, act.

no one I know has received any notifications since the news broke out, and we keep checking. They might have paused this because they got a lot of unwanted attention but we're still looking out for any changes.

Slate Magazine : Cruise Control

A major robotaxi company was all over San Francisco—and poised to go national. California just banned it.

California DMV cited “an unreasonable risk to public safety” posed by Cruise robotaxis.

I have been opposed to this sort of technology for quite some time, so I am glad that they saw the light, but sorry that so many accidents and injuries had to happen before they would realize the truth.
in reply to Joseph Teller

...not to mention a couple of other factors: one being the jobs we should want to preserve -- and the other, maybe less obvious, but equally important, is the human interaction that takes place. We need that connection and we benefit from the ad-hoc sympathy and flexibility that a human can provide.

Many of you already know Karvinen, but let me tell you about Pörri. Pörri is very large and very soft and has unfathomable amounts of silky hair that gets absolutely everywhere. He has no idea why he can't fit on my lap at the same time as Karvinen, or that he's the weight of two small cats. Whenever he climbs onto my lap it's only a matter of time before he flips around, like this. I love him.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

shure.

Personally, I'm currently moving into the extreme frugal #Linux #CLI / #TUI direction with OS/1337.

I need to get some fixups done to make it boot and then it would be ready to release.

Flatpaks are a cool field! You can now also only add the verified remote:

```
flatpak remote-add flathub-verified --subset=verified flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatp…
```

Yes I know this command by heart

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Before you do that, take a look at the GIMP beta Flatpak, using GTK 3!

GNOME Terminal No Longer Completely Sucks!! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/sR6wkYuEwh0
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I don't use my terminal enough to notice speeds (except launch speeds). That said, it's pretty wild that gnome terminal is so slow that it needs to be frame capped.

That said, it's good that they are working on it. A terminal is one of things that you always expect to be fast and light on resources.

Question for the #MPI folks: Has anyone actively signed up to support the MPI "standard ABI" as proposed here? arxiv.org/pdf/2308.11214.pdf

in reply to FCLC

MPICH has a prototype implementation of the new ABI (github.com/pmodels/mpich/pull/…) and it would naturally flow to the downstream vendors who have committed to previous ABI initiatives. mpich.org/abi/

Profiles on Mastodon sometimes look blank even when they're not blank 😲

It may happen if the account is very new and/or doesn't have many followers. If you follow a "blank" account, posts made after that follow will appear as normal on the profile.
