Heute den Beitrag über @Gargron in der ZEIT gelesen - das war Motivation genug, meine verbuggte #tuba auf #linuxmint wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen und die Fäden hier nach längerer Zeit wieder aufzunehmen. Neuer Versuch also!

GNOME Developers Suffer Constant Harassment #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/cOzTz6GQ64E
in reply to Brodie Robertson

It's most important to talk about this.

Lemme tell you a story. Back in, it might be 2008ish i was already fully on linux, KDE 3.5 I think. I met someone online I liked, she was using Windows live messenger. I tried with Kopete, a multi messenger. It wasn't working all that well. To the point where I jumped in IRC and just threw all my anger at the devs. How crappy it is, how they can't even make the texting work, they pointed me to the bug tracker. That angered me even more. 🧵+

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Many Linux users are lifeless individuals who want conflict and force their opinion on other. "You have to use KDE." "You have to use Arch." etc.
There isn't really a solution for this other than telling every toxic community member to do something with their lives lol

I own several consoles (XBox 360, Series X, Playstation 3, 4 Pro, Switch etc.) and I am absolutely enthusiastic about the #SteamDeck !

It's PC-Gaming like it's a console. And better.

I totally love this device ..! 😀

Snow covered Langdales from Blea Tarn

I took this on Thursday, the snow cover took me by surprise. A heavy shower had just moved across the Langdale fells and then the sun came out - it took me a moment to realise that the reason the mountains were so bright was because of the snow.

Dendritic patterns in sandstone paving. Although they look like fossilized plant material they are actually formed as minerals crystallise between sandstone layers.

Black Friday is a massive bait-and-switch. You queue up in the cold and dark waiting for a chance to grab a item which is 'on sale' (it's not, really) and in 'limited supply' (also not real).

If a big-screen TV normally costs $1200, but Ugly Box Store is selling it for $600, the manufacturer is still making a profit, only now has the added entertainment of watching people gouge each other's eyes out trying to score 'big savings.'

in reply to Muse

I've often speculated that the ruling class/moneyed interests amused themselves by getting us to fight with each other. You can't get much more disgusting than fighting over consumer goods when you could buy them any other day and save yourself the bruises, even if it means paying full price. I just really don't get materialism. It's like the energy drink paradox in which the more you drink the more exhausted you get. It's a psychological negative feedback loop. It brings out the worst in us too.

For decades corporate Australia has drooled over US Black Friday. This looked so much better than Melbourne Cup Day! Finally, it has worked its way into our culture, even though most Australians have no idea that it is a post Thanksgiving shopping spree event in the US.

This weekend it was already awful on the roads and near shopping centres. On Saturday mornings I often like to go to Eastland Shopping Centre, not so much for the shopping as for the plaza area where the local library and Kyoto Cafe are situated. I pick up a book or bring a book, read, have lunch, maybe pick something up from the shops (like socks yesterday), then head home.

Silly season has hit big and early this year. So many dangerous drivers on the road. I'm going to have to skip my weekly treat until January, because I refuse to be near the mayhem. sigh!

in reply to Muse

Can't wait until it opens... I'll be there for a few hours before work every day! Coffee, cats, and books!

Is it any different than the v1 steam deck smell? This may or may not affect my future purchase decision.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Gentle reminder that those smells are generally volatile compounds that are no bueno. Though I honestly have no idea what the relative risk actually is.

Well Mastodon, several kind folks here recommended ‘The Ministry for the Future’ when I asked for great #books to get lost in. So I have taken your advice.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Reading it right now (64%). Surprised how positive it develops, yet not naive. Made me learn more about solarpunk and hopepunk as literary styles and worldviews.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

The most stupendous book, still thinking about it nearly a year after reading it...

“Our care work is unpaid. Our medical expertise is unpaid. Our gender production is unpaid. Our advocacy is unpaid. Our training is unpaid. Our support work is unpaid. Our teaching is unpaid. Our writing is unpaid. We are in poverty. And so now, at the very point at which our genders are beginning to be renaturalised by liberal capitalism, as the state offers a pittance of funding to our healthcare needs, we demand not merely free healthcare, not merely a place at work, not merely a reparation settlement: we demand wages for transition.”

in reply to Muse

Well, as you've noted, I've had an interesting career. I didn't just work in news, I lectured at the planetarium, I was a remote employee for AOL, a gamemaster for Simutronics, a docent aboard the USS Hornet ... then also trained as a voice actor and taught myself to be a chef.

But none of that was because I had a master plan of some kind.

in reply to Muse

Even when people do have master plans, usually they go skittering off in at least a few directions.

Just 600 years ago, nine species of enormous, flightless birds called moas wandered around New Zealand. Some of these magnificent big birds grew up to 12 feet tall, which would tower over Sesame Street’s most famous resident.

Moas had thrived for millions of years. And suddenly - shortly after humans arrived on the islands - they went extinct.

Our situation actually had nested ternaries, so `cond1 ? a : cond2 ? b : c`. Generally I don’t mind them, but they can be a vector for creeping complexity.

@neauoire I know a bit late but while cycling under some gloomy skies I thought of the movie and it suddenly made me remember a tschech movie I saw as a kid which deeply impressed me and somehow I connect it with the silver globe, maybe because both had "Silber" in their german title. 😉
Anyhow, the movie name: "Pověst o stříbrné jedl"
Maybe you like it too.
