Every time we let the capitalists rise, this is the shit we get, along with many other ills.

It is psychotic to allege that NIH grant funding “lines grantees pocketbooks”. Grants pay for the scientific research proposed in the application. Budgets are tightly monitored on at least three levels. The Regime simply doesn’t think scientists should be paid for their work.

Jim Cameron on digital and physical effects: “It’s really the higher question of what are you trying to show, and what are you trying to say? I don’t attach some kind of dogmatic aesthetic around in-camera or practical... It’s really just a means to an end.”

Being in the industry, I can tell you with 100% confidence that a lot of the "great practical FX" that you've seen in the past 20 years... is actually CG (3D models, anim, sim, rendering, comp, etc). The whole point is that good CG has gotten so good that you'd have no idea f you didn't already know.

But it's cooler for studios and directors to just lie about that and market things as "100% practical", and the lie is easy to get away with because it's indistinguishable.

@Gargron @ezekiel Not one example? How would the T-1000 in Terminator 2 have worked with practical effects?

:boost_requested: Can anyone recommend an antenna to plug into ESP32 modules?

I mean the kind pictured, I like to be able to place the antenna outside my enclosure.

The datasheet specifies w.fl, mhf III from ipex, or AMC. I picked amazon.com/dp/B07R21LN5P as a cheap guess since it says u.fl ipex but it won't fit and amazon corrects w.fl to u.fl...

Unfortunately the recommended TFPD08H10060011 is not something I can find to buy.

Asking for part numbers if anyone has done this before.

We're putting Microsoft's "Digital Principles for Europe" to the test. 🔥

Can they really guarantee #DigitalSovereignty for Europe?

We dive into news articles, transparency reports, and other #Microsoft announcements to find out!

#SpoilerAlert: No, they can't!

#CloudAct is very clear that any businesses owned, operated by, controlled or run by an entity from the #USA or has any business activities in the #US falls fully under it.

  • It's so evident that a representative of #OVH certified under oath that they are subject to it because they have #servers in the USA!

Even if Microsoft were to split up their own subsidiary for the #EU they could not escape that.

The invention of the ox-drawn plough was a turning point in the #prehistory of #agriculture because it was the first time food production was decoupled from human labour (doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2019.105).

This is why, from Medieval Europe to the ancient Near East, farms were measured by the number of oxen (later horses etc.) working it, not people (doi.org/10.1002/9781118970959.…)

Yet it's surprisingly difficult to pinpoint when this actually happened.

in reply to Palm Oil Detectives

it's difficult. Palm oil is ubiquitous and has resulted in cheap supermarket food. One way is to try to cook from scratch. Why not bake your own cakes or biscuits. Try to buy food from smaller local outlets like grocers and even grow some produce in your garden -from fruit to herbs to save money.Try initially to change one thing permanently then add on something else. Go online for simple, cheap recipes.

Just saw 🇩🇪 highlighted ✅ in your digital sovereignty index. As my subjective assessment for Germany is 🔴🏮 I was very curious to the used index metrics: Just the numbers of "good" servers you can see out of the Internet? 🙈

Never! Reasons? Well ...

▶️ What about all those hidden "bad" instances?
▶️ What about all those operating systems and user software packages that constantly communicate and save their data on platforms like MS365, Google Workspace, Meta, ...?
▶️ What about the Cloud providers (Azure, AWS, GCS) where the "good counted" instances are hosted.

Is this digital sovereignty?

And BTW 😠: Does Crimea belong to Russia 🇷🇺, as indicated in your map? Seriously? Together on a web page where you use the word "sovereignty"?

Now out at America—an essay I've been working on on-and-off for almost a decade. It became about what life with AI is doing to the practice of asking questions.

"With what we ask, we shape ourselves and each other." americamagazine.org/features/2…

in reply to Nathan Schneider

I love the way that despite the fact the essay is about AI questioning, this covers the art of questioning others to learn about them and their story.

It's about empathy and humanity. Being interested enough to listen and then ask more questions.

Bravo Nathan.

Cats in Japanese Folklore and Culture

Entire books could be, and have been, written about cats in Japanese culture and folklore. Cats in Japan are both revered and feared with the spectrum ranging from kawaii (cute) cat characters, through to terrifying yokai cats who eat humans alive. Because the topic is so vast, this post will just scratch the surface but will include:

~ the legend of the maneki neko

~ an introduction to yokai cats

~ some folktales about cats

~ a recommendation for books and a film

~ a collection of Japanese woodblock art featuring cats.

I hope you enjoy it!
