Oh, I'm happy to say, "Good riddance to bad rubbish." However, they are ALL bad rubbish, so, IMO, Dipshit's misogyny is on display yet again.

Looks like Kash Patel will be next.

Fortunately, Dipshit doesn't need to scrape the bottom of the barrel for replacements. He pushes the bottom lower every day.

In 1998 we had a VCR that this post reminds me of; it would show the current timestamp of the movie, but it was in metric minutes and seconds, that is, 100 seconds in a minute, and 100 minutes in an hour. No one know when the movie would be over. merveilles.town/@neauoire/1164…

We've had this long furling tape from Japan for the longest time, for years!! thinking it was in inches. Causing us lots of mistakes and fuck ups, the whole time we thought it was our own miscalculations, that we must have messed up in converting it to metric or something.

1) The unit on the tape is in tenth of a foot.
2) That's almost exactly 3cm, BUT NOT QUITE.
3) The ruler says FEET, but then breaks it down in 3cm segments each divided in tenth of a tenth of foot.

WHAT THE FUCK RULER

in reply to frew

woah, decimal time! That's cool, was the VCR made by Swatch?

Took the forestay down, disassembled the furler into a thousand little pieces, had a new forestay swaged, fed it through, hooked up, oiled, lifted the new jib sail, all without dropping a 👏 single 👏 tool 👏 in 👏 the 👏 water.

What did you need the oil here for? I have not even taken down a yachts staysail down before.

so .. do you just rock paper scissor who jumps in or do you let the tool be free ?

Substack promoted Andrew Tate as their #1 "bestseller" last week. Cool company. Great leadership.

So I went ahead and made a browser extension.

Kill Yr Substack intercepts every Substack link (even on custom domains) and redirects it to `archive.is`.

Substack's numbers go down. You still get to read the thing tho.

The canvas aboard Pino is very old, thin and discolored, we've started replacing some of it.

A few days ago we replaced the flap that goes over the companionway doors. You can see the color difference between it and the fabric on the far-left side.

It was our first time putting in dome snaps ^^...

10 years ago, someone wrote a unit test for @servo that included a cookie expiry date of April 18, 2026. At that time Servo was only 3 years old and I'm sure 10 years in the future sounded like a long time!

Well, we're still here, and now our CI is broken until I can get another maintainer to merge github.com/servo/servo/pull/44… .

@niels Ever since learning about the short ton (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_to…, 907kg, in the US apparently often called just the ton) I wish we defined a “long yard”, equal to 1m, and call it just “yard” in Europe for convenience.

This weekend we had a collective work session for 'Another Infrastructure (AI)', an art project about the environmental and social impact of data centres in south Dublin.

Seven artists will build a community-run server and host artist led workshops and events over the next few months, opening conversations about topics including heat, disinformation, tokens, game systems, counter-maps and thneeds.

Including @dasha @yambunz and @aswemaysink

I was getting that error a lot, only directly after a software reboot.

Turns out my pc doesn't fully pwoer-cycle everything when I do a software reboot (obviously 🤦) and one of my USB drives is permanently mounted, when it looks for the drive at boot it's already initialized and refuses to mount it (or even recognize that it exists). Turning off fast boot solved the problem.

A(nother) 'senior' humiliation:

While loading and stowing personal gear aboard Wrack again, I had to cross from the deck of our marina neighbour's Catalina 34 sailboat to Wrack, over a gap of maybe a metre, in dead calm conditions.

I ended up in the sea.

I blacked out for a second. Then, disoriented, I reached for rigging that wasn't there and fell between the hulls, my ribs and wrist hitting Wrack's gunwhale.

The water was bloody cold. I managed to swim, fully clothed, to a barnacle-encrusted ladder from which I was pulled onto the dock.

I tried to stand up, with the help of three 'marineros' (marina workers), but couldn't so I lay on the dock for 15 minutes to regain my stability — and, it has to be said, my sodden dignity.

Below, the lurid souvenirs:

in reply to wrack

woah! that's my nightmare, we know lots of folks who've lost someone they knew like that, falling between the boat and the dock and getting stuck under or freezing to death in the dark unable to find the ladder.

Glad you're alright, other than a few bruises.

Also, question, do jump labels map to a prime? If so there is interesting room from something like derefing a symbols count into the bag. Something like x^25 x^27 &x producing [3^2 5^3]. If 3 is associated with an address you suddenly have an indirect jump.
in reply to ... and and and and ...

Well, more a fun idea extension given how slow exploding a number would be. Combining numbers is destory information is very cheep, but undoing that is very expesnive.

hm, this kinda gets into nested bags tho...

Hi @nextcloud is there an easy way to get the internal private share link (one of the form `https://example.com/index.php/f/NNNNNN`) directly from the path of file (something like `/my/path/to/file`)?

For any file I am trying to produce a text with the path and the link, so that one can clic on the link or browse directly to a path (when synchronised to a local filesystem for instance).

Mastodon, I need your help! As more European countries and orgs look to ditch US technology and move to sovereign or open source alternatives, I'm trying to track these efforts.

So far, I've found more than half a dozen government agencies, cities, orgs, that are embracing digital sovereignty but want to hear about other examples that I've missed. Who else should I be adding to this?

Here's a list of what I have so far:

UK told its Big Tech habit is now a national security risk

The warning comes from Open Rights Group, whose latest report, "Tech Giants and Giant Slayers," argues that the UK has let a small group of American megacorps entrench themselves across critical infrastructure, shaping not just systems but policy itself. The result is a mix of economic drag, security exposure, and a growing inability to act independently when it matters.

The risk shows up when politics is involved. The report points to US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, and claims Microsoft shut down email and banking-related services for affected individuals. The report says this shows how "tech powers of sanction" can cut off access entirely, and what that might look like if UK-US relations soured.

The Competition and Markets Authority says at least £500 million a year is being overspent on cloud services, and that's before you add in projects that overrun, suppliers that never quite leave, and systems everyone avoids touching.
