New #ISEPpapers #preprint! Comprehensive analysis of the microbial consortium in the culture of flagellate #Monocercomonoides exilis https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.02.02.578639v2 #protists #microbes #mitochondria #bacteria #biorxiv @biorxivpreprint

"Monocercomonoides exilis is the only known amitochondriate eukaryote, making it an excellent model for studying the implications of mitochondrial reduction from a cellular and evolutionary point of view."

The #symbioses that gave rise to primary #organelles are key events in the origin of #Eukaryotes. @PierreSGarcia @FredBarras & @SGribaldo use markers from 2 conserved machineries for [Fe-S] cluster biogenesis to support an early emergence of #mitochondria & #plastids within #Alphaproteobacteria & #Cyanobacteria #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3FNP5E5

"They propose that early protoeukaryotes were predators, relying on bacterial prey. These bacteria, in response to predation, produced toxins as a defense mechanism. Over time, these bacteria were domesticated to serve as mitochondria within eukaryotic cells, and their toxins evolved into apoptotic factors. "

High school didn't teach you how to do your taxes, how to negotiate pay, or the value of creativity, but I bet all of you learned that THE MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL.

Let's talk about what you SHOULD have learned about the #mitochondria.

Did you ever wonder about the physiological, ecological, and evolutionary consequences of a low energy-yielding metabolism in anaerobic eukaryotes? I attempted to provide an answer in this essay: https://rdcu.be/c3xJa

To all #mitochondria enthusiasts out there: we just released mitoMouse, a metabolic model for mouse mitochondria. It is based on the well-known and detailed human MitoCore model, which we updated with latest knowledge on the CoQ crossroad; and translated to SBML3 and Jupyter for easy usage. mitoMouse has 390 genes and 445 metabolites involved in 560 unique reactions. Find here our preprint with all details: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.01.02.522468v1
