Delighted to announce that our phase 1 safety trial of a natural product cocktail for topical antimicrobial applications is in print. Fab to work with Julie Bruce, Blessing Oyedemi and Nick Parsons via Warwick's Clinical Trials Unit nature.com/articles/s41598-022… #ancientbiotics
in reply to Freya Harrison

omg so cool to hear that this work has progressed. I remember talking about it with @Defectivebrayne on #microtwjc so many years ago. Those discussions were one of the moments that really brought me closer with the wider academic community and showed me the value of the birbsite and online conversation. Plus i'm just tickled with the idea of resurrecting old medicine.

Tagging our reboot of the journal club @MicrobioJC

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan @Defectivebrayne @MicrobioJC Thank you! We just submitted an application for the next big grant on this project, so fingers crossed we can keep up momentum.

I've seen folks try in the past. Eager to know if the network is large enough now. Plus pinning and following hashtags hopefully makes it easier for the haves to find the have-nots. I unfortunately am a have-not in this case. Unless :scihub: :BlobCatKnife:

If you don’t know what I mean when I say “surveillance capitalism” or “people farming”, here’s a quick overview I did for the BBC a little while ago:

bbc.co.uk/ideas/videos/surveil…

(Where we differ with Shoshana, who coined the former term, is that she sees it as a corruption of capitalism, whereas I see it as the natural evolution of capitalism in the digital network age.)

"16. Safety is a characteristic of systems and not of their components

Safety is an emergent property of systems; it does not reside in a person, device or department of an organization or system. Safety cannot be purchased or manufactured; it is not a feature that is separate from the other components of the system. This means that safety cannot be manipulated like a feedstock or raw material."

We went for a drive and brunch in the Yarra Valley region of Victoria. This is where all the wineries grow their grapes. It's also where many people have their weddings. I found a place that had outdoor dining, which had not been open for some time because of the flooding. It was a lovely day, but most people were inside having wedding meals. We didn't have to book for the outdoor area. We sat next to a frog pond where the froggies were all singing away, and we had all these stunning views. The food was excellent!

@Marek Bachmann :friendica: Ah, you need to run bin/composer install --no-dev whenever the composer.lock file changes.
in reply to Marek Bachmann

Thx, that fixed it. Nice! Was pulling the last times without worrying about that 😉

Anyone aware of a @Mastodon repo where storage is bound to #mysql rather than #postgresql?

Why?
I am looking to binding Mastodon to #iODBC such that storage is #DBMS independent.

A MySQL binding makes this effort easier since we already have a library in place for making any MySQL-specific app #ODBC based.

I had fun playing Möbius Front '83 yesterday, so I will be playing some more over at cast.samsai.eu/ in about 15 minutes. See you in the chat!

Got in a little 15-20 minute session of #BeatSaber for the first time since fucking up my back a week and a half ago. 😤 Felt pretty good, and although I didn't play any fitbeat maps (I was trying to be gentle!), I did play "CANDYYYLAND", which... was prolly a bit much.

Still recommend that song. It feels great to play: bsaber.com/songs/294c/

I haven't made a Mastodon post yet so let this maple cookie pie I baked last night be the first one. Topped with vanilla brandy cream. Cheers!
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan thanks for the reminder - is there a way to add alt text after posting? I can't seem to find that option
in reply to Grace Deitzler

if your instance has edit then you can use that otherwise the way is to delete and redraft. I follow @PleaseCaption for reminders 😀

I wanted to see what you can do with a reasonably modern camera and an f4 lens, but it's already very cold outside, so there's only this one picture 🌌

if you've ever messed up a dimension or a hole position on something you're building, don't be too hard on yourself.

at least you're not the Cisco design engineer who caused an entire product line recall by placing the mode button (which resets the switch if held) directly above an RJ45 port.

I am not generally a #StarWars person, but I've fallen into a very fun hole recently due to the A More Civilized Age podcast (amorecivilizedage.net/) and my partners. I ended up watching Andor and Rogue One, and today I watched season one of The Mandalorian. This is the most SW I've consumed in years.

Anyway, a vigorous convo yesterday on whether #StarTrek can even be usefully analyzed from an anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist perspective means that I might have a new podcast early next year.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

Prereqs for such a podcast:

1. We have to finish our current reading of China Mièville's "A Spectre, Haunting".
2. We have to figure out the scope of the texts covered. (Someone suggested not including TOS, and I disagree.)
3. We have to figure out the format: no way are we doing to an ep-by-ep watchalong, so we're considering how to select texts and link them across eps. We have some ideas.
4. Our partner who is a prof simply cannot have anything else on their plate before next semester. 😁

ZOMG! This is how cranberry sauce was served in my house as well. MEGA-CRINGE!
in reply to Muse

@greg We saw the same thing coming from Vancouver down to the U.S. border. Big pond with a huge layer of cranberries afloat on it.
in reply to Muse

I would guess that cranberry bogs were one of the crops not adversely affected in the BC lower mainland flooding last fall.

in reply to Muse

Cats have been doing that since people and cats lived together.
in reply to Muse

@Jodi K Pretty much! Do you think there was some sort of evolutionary selection? 😹
