This Github Trend Must Stop Before It Begins #YouTube #Github youtu.be/PLlrH0htVnc
in reply to Brodie Robertson

No project that actually wants community contributions should be doing this. Honestly, I feel like this developer might just want to artificially inflate his GitHub stars so they can put it on a resume or something. that or they just want free internet points

Either way it does not inspire much confidence that this developer is taking the project seriously.

Good to see you are on #mastodon and thanks for creating non-funny cartoons, much appreciated.

Supposed to get snow, but instead got freezing rain. A bit of a pain, but it is certainly beautiful on the trees #silentSunday

Ant biologists thought the small, strangely-shaped Manica parasitica from the Sierra Nevada was a social parasite of another ant species, but the truth is even stranger.

earthdatalogin by Carl Boettiger streamlines the process of accessing NASA data from the Earth Data cloud program.

It also has a few vignettes explaining "Data Cubes with STAC", "Cloud-Native Access", and even shows how to read some data from a 31 Terrabyte Zarr.

"Winter Song" is my new #painting about those bright winter days of lemon and pink skies, when the air is clear and cold, and the #birdsong rings louder than ever.

As well as the little robin belting out his sweet song, I've included other winter birds: fieldfare, waxwing, redwing, and (my favourites) starlings.

Thanks for looking. 🙏

I didn't know what to expect from the unannounced job but I wasn't expecting Krile to job change into a Pictomancer, Alphinaud in the previous trailer was just bait.

But with 2 new DPS jobs, DPS queues are going to be absolutely disgusting come the new expansion #FFXIV #FinalFantasy #FF14

Granted, it won't help with the rest of the content. XD

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS cartridges use NAND flash for storage , not mask ROMs. Like all Flash memory, they "leak" charge over time and eventually lose data.

The Switch and 3DS card reader tells game cards to "refresh" themselves periodically. gbatemp.net/threads/nintendo-s…

But, some users are reporting cartridges already dying, especially ones they haven't used for years. I wonder which of mine already don't work.

Just a reminder that you don't own any data you can't back up. Buying physical cartridges and game cards isn't enough if they're using technology that inevitably deteriorates over time.

Hello @Gargron I'm Marton and I run the YouTube channel TechAltar (youtube.com/techaltar) where I plan to make a video about all things Mastodon, the Fediverse & ActivityPub.

Would you be up for an interview? As a fellow Berliner, I'd love to invite you to our studio to shoot it with a proper set or digitally would work too. If yes, please let me know how I can contact you in private or send me an email to techaltar@gmail.com

Wow, what a story.

"Charles Robert Jenkins was growing increasingly uneasy about leading aggressive military patrols near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a misnomer for the dividing line between South Korea and North Korea, two nations still technically at war today. Terrified by rumors that his division was being sent to fight in the bloody conflict in Vietnam, the 24-year-old American sergeant made a decision that wrought decades of hardship and regret—and led to an improbable love story."

A user posted this on IRC the other day: youtube.com/watch?v=BWq6XnWKQn…

And this leaves me with a dilemma. As a free software advocate, I do not want people using Windows. As an engineer, I want to provide accurate information. My things are Linux and BSD. I last tested this many years ago and was very happy that Windows did *not* boot.

I could gloss/fudge over it and not mention it. Or mention it and say not to use it (because it's non-free). In any case, mentioning it means promoting it.

Thoughts?

  • Don't document it. Only talk about free systems. (46%, 7 votes)
  • Document it, but strongly say not to use it (53%, 8 votes)

in reply to Leah Rowe ist kein Roweboter

I think it's better to document it then leave people with a bad experience following some half put together guide. In the end you'll be blamed for it but at least if you document it then you can say they didn't follow the guide properly

Fun stuff: x11-misc/albert used to be licensed #GPL. Then the maintainer decided to arbitrarily make it proprietary with a custom license ("freeware, i.e. proprietary and source available", with a limited right to redistribute binaries for specific Linux distributions). Except that the project has received some pretty large contributions before that, and the authors of these contributions hold the copyright to them. Since the contributions were made under the GPL, they cannot be incorporated into a proprietary project.

On top of everything, the maintainer has *deleted* the issue discussing the license issues, in particular the GPL violation.

Most chips are formed on a silicon wafer, but this RCA telecommunications chip is constructed from sapphire. It is a silicon-on-sapphire CMOS chip, with silicon circuits sitting on top of a thin sapphire substrate. 1/11

If you never watched Sliders (1995) I recommend watching at least Season 1 and 2, quality drops after that but the initial was pretty good. It’s Sci-fi from the 90s about sliding to other dimensions.

if this conversation is real, the other person likely assumed federal meant employed by the government.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
If true, and again still assuming it's a real conversation, just a bizarre response. What would stock options in government even mean?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron you could call those government stocks, but there's not options on bonds, and they aren't given to federal employees as a benefit. Federal employe benefits are typically healthcare, and pension through PERS or similar. Not typically bond buying or anything.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
Minimum wage for federal civilian employees is $31.2 k according to this:

opm.gov/news/releases/2022/01/…

Lower 48 poverty level is $14.6k

In my state, average 1 bedroom apartment is $1.97k/month

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron public school paraprofessionals like myself are technically employed by the government. My life would be radically improved if I made even $40k a year.
