Hi friends,

The alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, I have brain cancer.

I built a working, scalable, proof of concept library of shared alt text with fuzzy matching.

I'd like to connect with the #accessibility dev community. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Github: github.com/alt-text-org
WIP MVP: a site designed for writing alt text with a private library: my.alt-text.org

Boosts appreciated

CachyOS gets experimental handheld edition for ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion GO and Steam Deck (soon) gamingonlinux.com/2024/05/cach…

Not quite sure why someone would want to use anything but SteamOS on the Deck. No one can compare to Valve when it comes to support. Things like that scheduler will surely hit SteamOS, once Valve thinks it's ready from prime-time.

But sounds like a great solution for non-Deck handhelds, especially if this includes a gamescope session to have a gaming mode like the Deck does.

lol - if I see one ad in a game I payed full price for, that's it for me. Gonna GTFO. I have a library full of games I can play, probably until I die of old age, without looking at an ad once.

Fedora Change Proposals Are Bigger Than Fedora #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/KPW3g5QZOlI

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I don't quite like his language there, but he does have a point that in a codebase with such a large amount of bit tricks and deliberately wrapping things it's hard to get the ergonomics of wrapping vs non-wrapping arithmetic right.

His unhinged mails are always slightly hilarious to read though.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

At least this time he's calling the tools stupid instead of calling the people stupid. 😀

When I worked on the Metaverse, I talked with developers about whether generative AI would make creating games cheaper and they disagreed.

They also quoted the example of CGI in Hollywood movies. It simply raised the bar on expectations versus enabling cheaper special effects.

firstly happy belated birthday, and second owing to the fact that video was recorded a month ago, then in theory 555 will hit in days? On Wednesday to be specific?

Can you explain more about the Wayland/Nvidia race condition that makes some people with Nvidia on Wayland have a sucky time while others (like me) have no issues at all?

As a long-time XFCE-user I can fully subscribe to the conclusion of this article: »non-GNOME GTK desktop environments need to work together to formulate an answer to the onslaught of libadwaita and the GNOME-ification of GTK. […] If they don’t, there won’t be an XFCE in a few years. What’s the point in developing XFCE if you’re at the mercy of whatever choices GNOME makes?« osnews.com/story/139512/linux-…

it's such a shame the way Thom wrote the article makes it look like @linuxmint is fighting against GNOME, which isn't the interpretation I got when I read the original article. They're just trying to make those apps work well on their desktop and explaining why - GNOME apps are made for the GNOME desktop (tested, supported, etc.), and therefore the Cinnamon developers want to provide functional, well-tested platform-agnostic GTK apps, which is a valid reason that I 100% support.

Linux Mint isn't trashing GNOME in any way, and they also explicitly said they're not blaming GNOME for anything.

in reply to TheEvilSkeleton 🇮🇳 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm not blaming GNOME either.

However, fact remains that libadwaita has sucked a lot of air out of the room for desktops like Xfce, and they're obviously feeling the squeeze. It's definitely not GNOME's job to cater to non-GNOME desktops, but there's no denying that the heavy focus on libadwaita is having negative side effects, and pointing that out should not be dismissed as being "anti-GNOME".

GNOME is a great desktop, and its developers are doing an amazing job, libadwaita included. That does not mean, however, that libadwaita's negative side effects on Xfce and other non-GNOME GTK-based desktops magically go away. They're experiencing real issues over there, and waving them away feels deeply unfair to the people working on Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, and others.

After several days of work, I finally pushed several commits to my website to accommodate those who rely on high contrast themes. Huge thanks to @acidiclight for helping me out by sharing a lot of feedback!

And a request to the broader community - feedback wanted and highly appreciated.

Linux Mint Wants To Revive GTK3 Applications #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/7jAygGe5XRM
in reply to Brodie Robertson

You could use GTK4 without using libadwaita and it has the added benefit of hardware acceleration
in reply to Odoben

@odoben Without a doubt but a lot of apps are being built around it leading to them looking very out of place outside of GNOME
in reply to Brodie Robertson

fair enough. Originally GTK meant Gimp ToolKit. So it is basically returning back what it was.

We got some bad news at the vet today, and I’m still trying to sort through my feelings, honestly. If the next few days bring some relief for our wee 14 year old Toy Poodle Kiwi, we might have a few more weeks or months with her — and that’s the best case scenario. We are fortunate to have such a kind and pragmatic vet, but…my heart hurts tonight. 😔

in reply to KimberlyN

The new meds helped a little, but not enough. Kiwi’s last day was filled with sunshine, love, peace, and her favorite foods — blueberries and peaches.

She has been a joyful presence in our lives, and we will be forever grateful she chose us.

We promise to be there for and with them, right until the very last. And we promise to make the hard decisions, to not flinch, to not fade, but to stay true to that promise until the end. Run strong and free, Miss Kiwi. 💕
