From popular note-taking apps 🗒️ like Joplin to open-source mobile OSes📱, @alternativeto recommends a list of apps that integrate with your Nextcloud:

But not all of them *do* integrate with Nextcloud. Do you do any factual review before amplifying social media content?

If only the basic text app was usable correctly (i.e. as Joplin, HedgeDoc, etc.)… 🙁

I found a colleague whom I haven't already bored with my crochet tree of life from a few years back, which made me think maybe I'll post my favourite here for #FossilFriday - this Eurypterid.

Congratulations to a Faculty Committee at the University of Rhode Island for calling for the closure of the university's #OpenAccess Fund which supports APCs. The Committee argues that "rather than covering APC expenses of a small number of URI faculty, OA Fund resources should be redirected toward efforts that will have greater impact."

These actions align with the #BOAI20 Recommendations to move away from APCs.

I genuinely wish they gave up on this stuff and focused a bit more on their lightly lacking C# support.
Also saw some stuff about C++ lately. Which I still prefer overall.

France Adopts An Open Source Education Strategy – Free of Big Tech

Nextcloud is featured as a central component to France's "cultural shift in the digital education sector, promoting the use of free, open, and interoperable code, data, and content."

dataethics.eu/how-france-adopt…

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

this is a fantastic approach. I remember being in school very long ago and trying to explain “openoffice is exactly the same as microsoft but its free” no one could even be bothered to install it to try! big tech realised that cloud is even harder for opensource to compete with due to ease of setup but when students use it they say why are we paying with our data AND money for a worse service?
in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

This is wonderful. We need open source alternatives being accepted in Japan.

It seems that this door getting pulled was a problem that required increasingly stronger measures.

At least Gawd Awful Golf Courses save the land from Gawd Awful buildings, roads, mass vehicle traffic, parking lots, and more pollution of every kind.
in reply to Muse

Unfortunately, they also deprive land use for everyone, being exclusive to club members, they consume huge amounts of water and pesticides too. I'd much rather either leave them wild or use them for much needed affordable housing and walkable infrastructure.

GNOME Finally Fixed VR Headsets On Wayland!! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/GOstjazwuoY
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I'm a long time GNOME user and a huge fan of what they are doing UI/UX-wise.

I mean damn, it's literally a pleasure to use, it's almost like they have a design language going. A thing unheard of in the most FOSS world*.

But - and I mean it with love - boy do they love the smell of their own farts when it comes to technical discussions, especially Wayland implementation.

*this is only partly a joke

oh at last! now if Valve fix the virtual screen in VR they can almost say that SteamVR actually works propperly on linux (not bitter at all)

SteamOS 3.6.8 Beta for Steam Deck released, plus more Steam Game Recording updates gamingonlinux.com/2024/06/stea…

#SteamOS #SteamDeck #Steam

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

so, it looks like there are currently two ways of recording:
1. on demand, on press of a button
2. automatically during the session, with max duration set in options.
from what I can see, 2 only stops recording on game close, so there's no way to just save the last, say, 30 seconds as a clip with a press of a button, is there?
