Loved this episode of the @sustainoss podcast, about @ntnsndr’s book Governable Spaces: Democratic Design for Online Life.

I’ve been plagued by frustration for so long now that our online spaces don’t provide sufficient tooling for shared negotiation, instead defaulting to blunt mechanisms for shutting things down.

This was a great discussion about how things could be better.

@Twitter_expat Yes, I used a reflector, although I don't have a holder for it so I was kind of balancing it with my elbow.

extinct mammals of Scotland 🐺🐗 can you imagine if they could return?

Scotland is currently ranked 212th out of 240 countries in terms of how its biodiversity is doing, it's pretty bleak out here. Destructive farming practices/overgrazing, polluting industries, and species persecution for the sake of shooting are some of the reasons why there is such a wildlife crisis

Currently a critical situation in Paniai Region where the #Indonesian military have displaced large numbers of refugees.

"Indigenous peoples have been displaced from more than a million hectares of cleared rainforest to make way for transmigrants. Forest dwellers have been expelled to malaria-infested lower altitudes. Their rights are annulled by law."

I "play" a game called Kind Words. It's where people say supportive things to one another. You can also make requests for advice. This morning I have young people posting about how scared they are after this event.

Please be careful about "cut the parents some slack". You are absolutely right that it is hard to be a parent, and schools usually don't have helpful curriculums in this regard. However, when this is said to people suffering from the actions of a dysfunctional family, it often results in shutting them down when they are asking for help. It can look like you are unwilling to consider that they may be suffering at the hands of their family elders.
in reply to Muse

rest easy, i'm more than aware of how my words may be interpreted but no-one here was asking for help. If they were, i would take a different and more effective tack.

That quote is a threat and should be interpreted as an invitation to (if not justification of) the sort of ‘violent revolution’ communists like to talk about.

We (w @mrcmlr and Liam Shaw) have a new preprint up that explores how rapidly E coli picks of genes horizontally, breaks genome synteny, and otherwise change its genome structure (spoiler: a lot is happening really fast).

As I understand it, returns on fossil are not necessarily higher. It's more that the returns are 'safe' and short term. Whereas investments in cleaner alternatives are considered 'riskier' and returns are [sometimes] on longer term.
Maybe that's where capitalist financing has gone wrong. Buying shares used to be partaking in the risk of an enterprise, but it shifted to being safe like a bank. The real risks are now taken in speculating on a non-tangible economic values.

Bought a poinsettia today. 50% cheaper as no one wants to buy them post Christmas. These plants are natives of Mexico and are perennials so with the right care you can have a plant that stays for a few Christmases. #houseplants

Are there any other Guardian readers here?

I enjoy their news articles, but their cinema news and reviews reek of sexism. Their articles about the movie Barbie were largely on the nose. The retrospective article about Mary Poppins had me rolling my eyes. Just in the last day the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw has written about Shelley Duvall's career given our recent loss. Was the most important thing about Duvall her sexuality? Three times he goes into some depth about it, as if it were the most important thing about her as an actor and a human being. Would he have said the same things about a male actor?

I hope other people are also writing to The Guardian and complaining!

I noted poorly written article too. She deserved better all along. I read how the Shining was brutal in rehearsal and live action scenes by orders of the director in particular to terrify her for better scenes.
in reply to Muse

I subscribe to The Guardian. I read only news, though. I long ago gave up on anyone's cinema reviews, since they seldom match my impressions.
