Pinball Spire is a wonderful reinvention of what Pinball can be gamingonlinux.com/2024/10/pinbโ€ฆ

I played the demo. Just as I was pleasantly surprised by the pinball/Metroidvania mashup of Yoku's Island Express, I had a lot of fun trying out Pinball Spire's mashup of pinball and classic Castlevania.

Nothing like perusing some great texts for analysis and visualization inspiration.

immune is great. I gave a copy to an undergraduate student in my lab who wanted to study immunology in grad school.

I hope it's done better than Civ6 - I play Windows version via Proton as it runs better compared to the Linux port.
Good job, Aspyr (:

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr I hope so! It feels like the DMA, or Meta's reading of it is (more than) a little problematic. What's to stop e.g. Google or others from shutting down contract-less SMTP-based email federation on those terms? Unless there's an exemption there, I don't see how those rules wouldn't apply across the board. Cc @pluralistic

US dockworkers suspend ports strike until January

Biden noted the need for ports to be open to "ensure the availability of critical supplies" for those hit by Hurricane Helene, which has left more than 200 people dead in the US south-east.

In other words, the situation would leave Biden the ability to enact "emergency powers" due to the severity of the Hurricane and the ongoing relief efforts... and could have seize control from the companies running/owning them (who are all foreign companies at this point). Presidential power to do so in an emergency is his to wield in such, just as it was Bush's when 9/11 happened or Roosevelt's during the Great Coal Strike or Roosevelt for the Railroads at the start of WW2. Better to share the pie with the workers then lose it all/

Well That Was Effective

The details of the retirement fund changes, automation demands and other concerns haven't been revealed as yet in the general press). I'll see if there's more to pass along from the Shipping news show from Youtube if there is anything interesting.

Nicole Mortillaro of CBC nicely lays out all the things that SpaceX's Starlink is doing to destroy astronomy and LEO.

"how much infrastructure in orbit do we need? How much can we put up there safely? How much can we put up there without having very long-term impacts on the environment?"

And of course, the article include the obligatory "SpaceX did not immediately respond to a CBC request for comment." because SpaceX doesn't think they have to answer to anyone.

I'm super interested to see what the Website League (websiteleague.org/) comes up with. (I might even join their Discord ๐Ÿ˜ฉ) It's an island network being created by #cohost users that's allowlist-based and very conscious of governance. I'm down for an experiment like that. Why not?

The FAQ on their site has some helpful analogies and values statements. I'm especially curious how I'd find new folks/islands/neighborhoods to connect with in a practical sense. In looking for where to create Mastodon accounts for some things recently, I found that some very relevant instances weren't in the common instance search tools or weren't labeled in ways that made them come up when searching. That scenario seems even more likely in an allowlist-based environment.
