In December 2021 I set myself a goal: Add a year-in-review feature to #Mastodon before the next December. It's December 2024 and it's finally, slowly rolling out. It's not all that it was meant to be, because we couldn't prioritize it over all the other things we work on, but I didn't want to miss another year.

I've gained 19K followers and made 2,275 posts, which puts me into the top 1% of mastodon.social users. My most popular post was about how important it is that Mastodon is not centrally operated out of the US in light of the latest US elections.

Would highly recommend Every Living Thing by Jason Roberts - wonderful dual biography of Linnaeus and Buffon. Many fascinating anecdotes about both - especially Linnaeus, who was a bit of a character.

Roberts also makes the point that Buffon's writings describe many elements of evolution and biogeography well before Darwin or Lamarck, but that his work was largely ignored after the French Revolution because of his connection to the monarchy.
