New: Days after Meta had to kill its AI-generated profiles due to backlash, some Instagram users are now being shown AI-generated images of themselves that are being automatically created by Instagram and put in their feeds

dell has made the genius move of completely changing their naming scheme for all products. gone are the latitudes and XPSs and inspirons. now we have a two-pronged system: there's three categories (dell, dell pro, dell pro max (yes, really)), as well as three tiers (base, plus, premium)

this means we'll now have something like "Dell Pro Max 13 Premium" instead of "Dell XPS+ 13", and "Dell 15" instead of "Dell Inspiron 15". in some ways, this is clearer, sure, but it has the same problem replacing tweets with "posts" does: "XPS" on its own is short and memorable and doesn't require you to mention the brand. now it's a Dell Pro Max Premium, which is far clunkier. there's a reason samsung calls it an "S24 Ultra" and not a "Samsung 24 Ultra Premium".

dude, you're getting a Dell Pro Max 15 Premium!

I just had a glitch in the RSS feed resulting in me getting the last 50+ articles anew. But that's not the reason for me writing.

Getting this massive overview showed me that you published a few opinion articles or commentaries like this one in the last few days and weeks and I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate those. The news are great but putting context around developments is even better. So thanks. 🙂

in reply to Fluchtkapsel

@fluchtkapsel oooer, I did fuck about with the RSS earlier to take into account the link for the new guides type of articles, and i screwed a bit up on it but i fixed that

email me if it happens again after today

i have more editorials and guides and such to come, 2025 is a big year!

I switched back to KDE Plasma on X11 on a machine last night after it crashed while using Dolphin. While I cannot blame Wayland for sure, it was the only thing I could think of that might cause the whole machine to freeze. It's been fine since.

ShredOS is an entire OS just for destroying data

(La gente del PP dando like a este toot)

Remote work and study is an effective way to reduce the spread of contagious infections, but not everyone has access to reliable networks. We want to shine a spotlight on offline-first software which allows people to synchronize data when they're connected to the internet, and to continue interacting with it when they're not.

We're interested in hearing about applications that support intermittent connectivity. Tell us about your success stories with the use of such software, or the failure cases with online-only apps that motivated your interest.

Share the lessons learnt from development:

* how you handle or prevent conflicts when replicating data

* the UX impacts of eventually-consistent models

* approaches for debugging unexpected behaviour in distributed systems

Mullvad Browser is a strong privacy-focused alternative to Google Chrome.

news.itsfoss.com/mullvad-brows…

in reply to It's FOSS

The problem with anything Firefox-based is that Firefox is broken overall. Half the pages I frequent on the internet do not work properly in Firefox. Half the services provided by my computer, that require a browser to access, do not work on Firefox. Until Mozilla can make their browser work wit 95% of the internet, I cannot use it.
in reply to It's FOSS

You cannot post pictures to Bluesky from Mullvad. Cannot even connect to my Foundry server. Guess I'll just be uninstalling it.

The US should not be called "America". Nor should its citizens be called "Americans". Interestingly, many ex-pat US citizens refer to themselves as USians. Strange to articulate, but expresses their position on nomenclature clearly.

The US is not all of the Americas. The "Americas" was a convenient designation for the western continents decided upon by a European mapmaker, and the name stuck with the Europeans. So, when they stole the lands of the western continents, they just glued the name onto everything.

This humorous and largely accurate video lays bare all the insanity that is "America".

youtu.be/DfXoUaeLcDU?si=WexIT3…

in reply to Muse

Of course calling Turtle Island and Abya Yala "western continents" is also Eurocentric, as is calling China an eastern continent. East or west from where?
in reply to Muse

Actually, Mexicans gave you a name already. US citizens are gringos (or gringas, if female) because your Army uses green coats.

There are some false positives in that dataset, but I would still recommend it if you really want to err on the side of caution and don’t mind the false positives. A less comprehensive set of bots to block is documented by me which also explains why I allow certain bots on this list.

Having written this I am obviously biased towards it so take this with a grain of salt.

I once did a show where I had a friend dressed up like a zombie mummy princess. She wandered through the audience moaning "knickers...knickers..." until the scoundrels who stole them gave them back!
Sadly, they must now go to the tip. Don't tell any zombie mummy princesses where I now live!
