dell has made the genius move of completely changing their naming scheme for all products. gone are the latitudes and XPSs and inspirons. now we have a two-pronged system: there's three categories (dell, dell pro, dell pro max (yes, really)), as well as three tiers (base, plus, premium)
this means we'll now have something like "Dell Pro Max 13 Premium" instead of "Dell XPS+ 13", and "Dell 15" instead of "Dell Inspiron 15". in some ways, this is clearer, sure, but it has the same problem replacing tweets with "posts" does: "XPS" on its own is short and memorable and doesn't require you to mention the brand. now it's a Dell Pro Max Premium, which is far clunkier. there's a reason samsung calls it an "S24 Ultra" and not a "Samsung 24 Ultra Premium".
dude, you're getting a Dell Pro Max 15 Premium!

I just had a glitch in the RSS feed resulting in me getting the last 50+ articles anew. But that's not the reason for me writing.
Getting this massive overview showed me that you published a few opinion articles or commentaries like this one in the last few days and weeks and I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate those. The news are great but putting context around developments is even better. So thanks. 🙂
@fluchtkapsel oooer, I did fuck about with the RSS earlier to take into account the link for the new guides type of articles, and i screwed a bit up on it but i fixed that
email me if it happens again after today
i have more editorials and guides and such to come, 2025 is a big year!

The US should not be called "America". Nor should its citizens be called "Americans". Interestingly, many ex-pat US citizens refer to themselves as USians. Strange to articulate, but expresses their position on nomenclature clearly.
The US is not all of the Americas. The "Americas" was a convenient designation for the western continents decided upon by a European mapmaker, and the name stuck with the Europeans. So, when they stole the lands of the western continents, they just glued the name onto everything.
This humorous and largely accurate video lays bare all the insanity that is "America".

note that the intel processor 300 (god i hate this naming scheme) is not a bad chip if you use it for the right things (e.g. home server). but i feel like having Company XYZ naming their lowest spec product The XYZ is a bad idea all around.

in reply to Lynnesbian • • •you are a grandma buying a laptop for your grandson's birthday. you know he wants a laptop with an intel processor that supports windows' built-in AI. the sales rep tells you that laptops with Intel Processors don't support Copilot+, but do support Copilot. however, intel's Core and Core Ultra processors support Copilot+ and regular Copilot.
you ask for something that's guaranteed to do windows AI, and the rep shows you a US$2,500 gaming laptop with, quote, "enough VRAM to run a 30 billion parameter model without breaking a sweat, even before we start talking quantisation", which is supposedly "what a real AI enthusiast would want".

i think it's a combination of that, and making it harder to specify which ones to avoid to laypeople.
"avoid anything with pentium, atom, or celeron on it" now becomes "if it's intel, you want it to say core or core ultra" - which might make them avoid buying AMD because they don't use those terms, or they might just forget and buy one that doesn't say core/ultra
