My first real hike this year didn't go quite as expected (I chose a slightly shorter route and took the train home so I could relax on the couch for a few more hours), but I had fun and enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature.

From my recent talk about why open-source automation requires a lot of documentation and contextualization. I stand by it.

I just added the last chapter I needed to write to Axis. It's functionally finished, aside from a few added paragraphs here and there. Look at this thing; almost 112k words.

Pioneering geologist & oceanographer Marie Tharp changed our understanding of the ocean.

When Tharp sought a geology job at Columbia in 1948, women couldn’t go on research ships. So, she was hired to assist male grad students.

Back then, many scientists still assumed the bottom of the ocean was featureless. Tharp figured out how to use data to create sketches of the ocean floor. Her hand-drawn maps helped develop plate tectonic theory. theconversation.com/marie-thar… #science #history #HistoryRemix

@Muse Yes, Lluís Domènech i Montaner works are inspired by arab buildings, but there were other catalonian architects which were also inspired partly by arabic mosaics and art. Eg. Antoni Gaudi's Casa Vicens is an another example of a building inspired by Mudéjar architecture

Overall Modernisme was the catalonian interpretation of Art noveau.

Important to note that this study of whale circovirus only looked at beached whales.

👀 Surprisingly, it found the virus in 50% of animals. 69% of those showed virus in the brain.

Whales are intelligent creatures and probably don't "accidentally" beach themselves on land. If they beach themselves on land, there may be a logical evolutionary explanation.

...Such as fulfilling the need to separate infected individuals from the rest of the group?

‘Reckless, Spiteful’ Pipeline Project May Stumble on Failing Gas Markets

Lake Albert in southern Oregon is drying up due to years of water withdrawals and dry weather.

The lake is also becoming too salty to support the flies and brine shrimp that serve as a food source for migrating birds.
Full story: go.nasa.gov/3kPwsIE

These #Landsat images from 2002 (left), when water levels were near peak, and 2022 (right) show how much Lake Albert has shrunk.

To understand why the lake is drying up, scientists analyzed two decades of @nasa’s Terra satellite data.

They found that between 2001 and 2021, fewer days of snow cover and higher surface temperatures led to more evaporation over Lake Albert. go.nasa.gov/3kPwsIE

Well what do you know... The community backlash actually worked and #WotC not only is backing off on getting rid of #OGL 1.0a and forcing bad terms on creators through a much more restrictive 1.1 or 1.2, but they even took a step forward by also publishing the SRD 5.1 under a Creative Commons CC-BY-4.0 license as well!

dndbeyond.com/posts/1439-ogl-1…

#wotc #ogl
in reply to Nick Moline

Seriously CC-BY-4.0 is such a permissive license, commercial content, derivative works, even republishing the 5.1 SRD wholesale is something you can now do forever and WotC can't ever change their minds on this.

Jury is still out on what they will publish #OneD&D 's SRD under because they didn't promise to do the same with that, but for #5e we are good.

I consider this enough to end the boycott and I've resubscribed to my Dndbeyond membership.

@hapalochlaena very true. This whole fiasco has been a cluster****, at times it has decided into the point of mustache twirling bad guys tying creators to the train tracks over something as simple as animation in vtts like foundry.

published my first blog post: "Modeling virtual social spaces: in this house we post cat pics on Saturday" - ryanatkn.com/blog/modeling-vir…

One of its main influences is "Modular Politics: Toward a Governance Layer for Online Communities" by @ntnsndr and colleagues - arxiv.org/abs/2005.13701

One thing I like about the post is the explicit focus on power. Seems important as I'm building software for social spaces

to clarify, "steward" is just the name for a role in the default hub template and a convenient way to reference the idea, they can be constrained with fine-grained permissions like any other customizable role - this contrasts with Slack (no customizable roles) and Discord (coarse-grained permissions)

given this API you could design a set of roles that split powers, separating/balancing concerns

hub templates make it easy to share pre-fab designs with the initial roles/permissions/etc

As Falconet explains, the word bætyle was incorrectly translated from the original Phoenician. Instead of "animated stones," it should be "anointed stones." This makes sense as the meteorites were always anointed with oils and from the fact that most types of meteorites are covered with a black, matte, fusion crust: therefore making these stones appeared to be stones swallowed and vomited up by the Gods.

Pausanias: "... they pour oil on it every day ..." (Levi 1988)
