Since September, ProPublica has reported on five pregnant women who died after not receiving timely medical care under state #abortion bans: Amber Thurman, Candi Miller, Josseli Barnica, Nevaeh Crain and Porsha Ngumezi.
Here, our #ReproductiveHealth reporters discuss what they've learned in their investigations:

Hey #believeinfilm friends,
Looks like Kodak shared a few new numbers with their sellers (Kosmo Foto reveals). Many of these numbers are the annual film price increases (to keep pace with inflation). Some of these increases are pretty steep, like +30% for Gold. But others are going in a different direction!

Will you hoard any film this year?

Kosmo Foto just shared price updates from Kodak — some of it is good news!
#editorial for November 30, 2024 continues: “Stephen writes, “Kodak Alaris has announced a price increase to its range of films and single-use cameras which will take effect on 1 January 2025” (https://kosmofoto.www.analog.cafe
The criticisms from this 2022 article are still true today at the end of 2024.
The signup process is too hard and servers are too opaque for users to make good decisions when they come to the Fediverse. One example: some major server instances have blocked threads.net and *then* blocked servers that federate to threads.net. Policies are not evenly applied or even visible to users when they sign up for a server.

The incredible (and often overlooked) mountain landscape of the Isle of Harris, Scotland. This place is rugged and unvisited, partly because the beaches of the island steal away attention and partly because of its unforgiving character. Many of these areas are fairly unexplored in terms of photography and I'm excited to spend a bit more time doing just that over the coming years.

This post illustrates what I tried to tell folks here about how even though there are nazis on Twitter, and have always been nazis on Twitter, the lack of hidden replies, combined with a large community to file reports, meant that most Black women didn't see most of the abuse.👍🏿
Contrast that with Mastodon, where people fight against TheBadSpace, hidden replies are a thing, and folks don't believe Black users about abuse.
Yes, very aware of the issue. Just wanted to highlight the specific vector of abuse.
Not really sure what other purpose this reply mode serves. Do many (any) people use 'Followers only' for anything other than this kind of harrassment?
"Some people prefer to keep their posts to a closed group of people"
The use case discussed here is a bit different.
You can tag a non-follower in your post, then set the post to followers-only, making it so that the person you mentioned can see your post, your followers can pile on, and nobody else gets to witness this.
There really is no reason for this functionality, a followers-only post should not be shown to people who are not followers.
@Gargron @stefan @mastodonmigration @Bam "followers only" really should mean the followers of the poster AND the followers of any tagged person.
but you know "follow sync" is one of those huge/hard unsolved problems.
"I'll bring it up to the team on Monday."
Thank you, really appreciate it!
And thank you also for providing the context behind why this behavior exists, very interesting. Really shows how hard it can be to get this right.

Here's my take on the #enshittification of internet technology over the 2010s, based on the word @pluralistic coined. I've added "developer enshittification" to the mix (see: React). cybercultural.com/p/enshittifi…
However, I do end on a note of optimism: the decentralized web as represented by the fediverse, Mastodon and potentially Bluesky. "It's a new world for those who have chosen to leave the Enshittocene behind them. Won't you join us?"
The Enshittocene: How the Internet Got Worse in the 2010s
The 2010s was a period of the internet colonized by platforms, which caused 'enshittification' of web products. Users and developers both suffered, but are fighting back now through the decentralized web.Cybercultural
