#OnThisDay, 24 Feb 1968, Jocelyn Bell Burnell - along with her male supervisor and three other men - published a paper confirming the discovery of pulsars. She had built the array, picked up the signal and argued it was not an anomaly. Hewish received the Nobel prize for it in 1974: Bell Burnell did not.

In 2018 Bell Burnell received a ยฃ3m prize for her work. She's used it to set up a foundation to improve the diversity in STEM.

Anti-cheat stops Mecha BREAK running on Desktop Linux but works on Steam Deck gamingonlinux.com/2025/02/antiโ€ฆ

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Ran into this exact same issue when I was trying to install Infinity Nikki for the missus: Works but ONLY on the Deck

I almost think Valve should actively break whatever path they use for that nonsense

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

I don't understand the reasons behind this. What cheats work on Linux desktop but not on Steam Deck

Itโ€™s interesting to me that specifically indie devs are hesitating to use genAI in their projects, given theyโ€™re the ones that could benefit most from it

Seems pretty underhanded, Gamesense. Your bio says 'experts' but all I'm seeing on your link is zero work of your own?

Aaron Straup Cope | Keynote Speech FACT Symposium

I was delighted to watch this Keynote address from my former colleague and long time pal, Aaron Straup Cope. In it he makes a number of nice references to the projects we worked on together and the things I worked on after he and Seb Chan left the team at Cooper Hewitt.

Itโ€™s been 15 years since and Iโ€™m amazed at how the work is still talked about across the sector. Iโ€™m really proud of that work and reflecting these days, Iโ€™m glad we did the things we did and in the way we did them, even when they wound up looking like โ€œexpensive mistakes.โ€

This talk is worth your time if you care about cultural heritage, museums, and the internet. Itโ€™s especially relevant today as we are continually asked to bear witness to the possible undoing of hundreds of years of American democracy!

in reply to Micah Walter

outstanding talk, thanks for sharing. The bit from minute 45-ish onward about he-who-shall-not-be-named is brilliantly written and delivered.

I was in high school when they first said that computers could teach kids - at least, for arithmetic drill. In the 50 years since, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were really sure that computers would transform education.

Nope.

Notice that the lords of AI are NOT claiming they can replace that job? No fewer elementary school teachers?

It's because that's one area of human work where the KNOW they will fail. Again.
