Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wanted to have at least 5 Saudi universities among the top 200 in the world by 2030.
So he paid lots of scientists to falsely claim they worked in Saudi Arabia! Some got up to €70,000 a year just for pretending to work there.
Unfortunately they got caught. The newspaper El Pais exposed the scam.
In 2022, Saudi Arabia had 109 professors on the List of Highly Cited Researchers, compiled by Clarivate. After a bunch got caught, the number dropped to 26. 🤣
Someone should carefully check those 26 researchers.
In fact this "List of Highly Cited Researchers" is a fraud magnet. As of 2024, one in three apparently highly cited researchers has been caught engaging in bad practices.
This is a great example of Goodhart's Law: ""When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".
Thanks to @mansr for pointing this out.

Together with @vinciane (as OSP) we worked on the visual identity of @imal next exhibition (imal.org/en/events/i-am-vertic…), currated by @320x200 and @l03s, a introspective of iMAL that focuses on digital art that escapes or preceed the alienating monoculture of homogenity/smoothness/ressource-intensiveness of modern technology.
As an answer, we decided to work on the identity away from our modern devices (laptops and phones). Instead of relying on alternative/FLOSS softwares running on our modern devices, we searched for alternatives tools entierly. We ended up befriending: a telecran (or etch-a-sketch), a Dymo label printer, an old typewritter like pen-plotter, a copier, posca, conversations and our hands.
Opening on the 1st of July, come gossip with us at the documentation table about the beautiful ecosystems of folkloric/intimate/situated creative technology that can exist at so-called 'obselete' edges of techno-capitalism.
I am vertical (but I would rather be horizontal)
iMAL is the Brussels’ centre for new media and digital arts. It aims to support and showcase artistic and creative practices based on digital media & technologies.iMAL
working on that project materialized a necessary reminder that I hope will pass to others: technological alternatives can't be downloaded and installed on your modern devices. Alternatives is a cultural practice. Its require to revisit, deconstruct and change a whole "culture of doing" that was induced by the alienating softwares we learn to live with. This is something that can't be downloaded. It requires frictions, failing, to see your limits, and the limits of your tools, to befriend their singular attitude, to rephrase the problems differently, instead of looking for more (techno)-solutions, to refuse social behaviors and production standards we take for granted.
We didn't work by downloading yet another alternatives, we worked with a toy from the 60s, an office label printer from the 90s, a deprecated plotter for lettering on the drawing electronic board from the 90s.
Alternative is a way of thinking on how to make in meaningful ways depending of your context, not a service manufactured, provided or prescribed.

Migrating from X11 to Wayland is only half the battle. We will still need an effective XWayland implementation for several more years. So far KDE 6.4+ seems to make all applications run extremely well regardless of whether they are X11 or Wayland. Parallel that with managing Flatpaks through Flatseal, and it's a near-perfect workflow.

Wayland might catch up eventually, but it crashes and stutters too much for me to use it for daily work.
