Work in Progress.

It’s raining here today, so the temperatures are ok for lighting the forge. Thus I started on this whimsical project, which will involves #metalwork, #woodwork, #leatherwork and probably some #sewing too. #blacksmith #BeMorePirate

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Job #2 was to make a 100mm diameter dishing swage so I can continue with the #hook project.
It isn’t perfectly round, but it doesn’t fit in the gas forge to fix it (and I’m out of charcoal). Should be workable though. Made from an old rusty leaf spring. Might drill and bolt the end yet (after it cools). #blacksmith
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Dishing swage worked a treat. Almost all the blacksmithing is done now (just need to peen the tenon on the hook).
Next will be the wooden cup attachment and then on to the cloth bits. #blacksmith #BeMorePirate
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Today I peened the tenon and permanently attached the hook. Then turned the wooden cup ready for lacing, leather, etc
The nails are just there to line up the holes until I make some short nails for the four outer holes to nail it to the cup.

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Test fit with the mounting brace. It works!
The whole wood and brace section will be covered in leather or cloth.

#blacksmith #hook #BeMorePirate

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

It’s done!
The leather fitting was quite tricky and the lacing a complete pain, but it works and is functional.
An interesting project overall, with some new techniques and good practice on some I already knew.
Completely off the top of my head, no real plans or drawings.

Hope to see you there!

in reply to PINE64

@PINE64, is it possible to as questions on PeerTube livestream? Otherwise I don’t think everyone is happy with the Discord vendor lock-in.
in reply to MovedSinyx

I believe that will be possible, yes. That was the reasoning behind having the PeerTube option, anyway.
in reply to PINE64

Love that you're using #Peertube (even if just for the video). I just wish I wasn't working when this was on! 😭

Italian: adjective (mostly) goes after the noun.
English: why not both?

Good question!

Aus gov covid policy

We need to open the Intl borders to help the tourism sector.

Meanwhile overseas, the CDC is advising against travel to Australia.

I've been dreading this moment.

androidpolice.com/google-legac…

Those of us who took up "free Gmail for your domain forever" back around 2008 are now faced with "pay us a monthly fee or lose every purchase linked to your account".

There's no ability to migrate apps, media, etc to another account of course. This feels like extortion.

Is it possible to get the ACCC involved in something like this? I have no idea how to navigate something like that.

in reply to Melissa Avery-Weir

yeah I'm not looking forward to this at all. I've mostly been using my "business" domain as primary via Fastmail for the last few years but there's so much linked to what I considered my personal domain under this setup.

One thing it's definitely ensured is that they've set a date for me getting Google completely out of my life. I'm never using any of their services again if I can help it.

in reply to Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL]

That migration nudged me into self-hosted stuff, to be honest. Not everything; after messing around with self-hosted webmail and CalDav, I've opted to pay for Fastmail, for instance. But I'm 100% with you on unGoogling as much as possible. I've been burned too many times by their shenanigans (Reader, the 1000 iterations of Talk/Hangouts/Chat, Picasa...).

β€œThe library has always been a community center, a place where the public can get something they wouldn’t have otherwise, like free Internet,” another D.C. children’s librarian said. β€œBut it feels like we’ve become too good at our jobs. It becomes, β€˜Oh, the library can handle it.’ We’re getting more and more tasks and responsibilities that just feel overwhelming.”

Future Proof Plays: Kentucky Route Zero - 2022/01/15

KRZ is an indie classic that I'd never played. I found it to be utterly charming! While yes, subtlety is for cowards, I don't necessarily want a work to resolve every tension it sets up.

This was part of my game studio's Future Proof Plays series of streams. Check out our upcoming schedule and our entire set of archives (including my partner's streams) over on YouTube. Follow me over on Twitch to watch my streams live.

Banana bread is fantastic (although the recipe I have is kinda half cake/half bread, in that it uses baking powder not yeast).
