Ynes Mexia was born in 1870 & became one of the most successful botanists in the world.

At a time when most people felt women couldn't travel alone, she did - A woman of color in her 50s & 60s. Mexia traveled the Americas for 13 years, collecting >145,000 #plants & discovering >50 new species.

She was a fierce conservationist & early pioneer fighting to preserve the redwood forests of California. She also advocated for Indigenous rights. nps.gov/people/ynes-mexia.htm #HistoryRemix #science #history

Just noticed I inadvertently left off a zero ⬆️

Ynes Mexia discovered & categorized >500(!) plants.

A number have been named after her.

Also, I adore this Mexia quote:

“I don't think there is any place in the world where a woman can't venture." /2

Comparing and contrasting app privacy policies for Threads, Bluesky, Twitter and Mastodon:

This week Meta released their new app Threads. If your Mastodon admins don’t block them on their own, you can do it yourself. In Edit profile → Import and Export → Import you can use the import type ’Domain blocking list‘ to upload a csv file that should contain threads.net and threads.instagram.net: gist.github.com/veit/105692111…

I just want them to support hybrid AMD graphics so I can use my mini gaming PC without disabling the iGPU in the BIOS, which itself causes a lot of issues.

Probably a tall order that I in no way understand the workings of.

Unless I've missed one, the previous surge began around 14th June, I think in line with Reddit going belly-up? mastodon.social/@mastodonuserc…

Headed home after a short respite in Denver and the surrounding area, the top event of which (literally) was the 1400-foot (425 m) elevation gain hike to the top of Chief Mountain (11,713 feet = 3570 meters) with my youngest son and brother-in law to eat a sandwich and look out at the 360-degree view of the surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks. The tallest of these in our field of view was 14,272 foot (4350 m) Mt. Evans. I took many wildflower pictures along the way and may post some of these also.

I can’t go (too much travel in June and July) but this looks so good.

This seems like a pretty good statement regarding Threads from @Gargron blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/…

Nathan Schneider reshared this.

in reply to Mike Masnick ✅

so, I did join #threads because I am seriously sick of #twitter - but, here is the thing- Mastodon- with all its complexities- feels more of home than Threads. I amhoping Mastodon will be the stable alternative to Twitter

There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today:

That wasn't the question.

Might as well test out this Threads thingy… threads.net/@gaming0nlinux

So far though it’s super basic and there’s only an algorithm feed so it’s a bit gross.

Tarot coloring!

I historically knee-jerk hate the Emperor card and I also don’t like the traditional RWS art. Every time I draw an Emperor I just see *PATRIARCHY INCARDNATE.*

However, I chose to try to approach this one as though I liked the card, and I’m pleased with how it turned out!

My friend thought “approach it as though you like it” is an interesting life wisdom, and I might attempt it next time I have to brave the big crowded pharmacy, etc.

The Outsider Tarot reimagined The Emperor as "The Boss" which removes the gender and focuses on the role of command in a life. It's supposed to invite thoughts on why we obey the boss, and what tools do we develop for ourselves while working for them.

no I don't perceive any limits to interpreting the Boss in someone's spread as them. But I do think there is a slight negative interpretation which encourages a line of questioning about the role of power/hierarchy. These days I would read the Emperor with criticisms of power too. I'll add that the radiator depicted in the Boss does provide warmth that should be interpreted as a positive, but it also requires maintenance which the boss demands (and I consider neutral).

I'm currently taking an evolutionary biology course so expect some fun evolution-themed content here through the summer.

The last time I took this class was in 2001 & it's exciting to recognize how much we've learned over the last 20+ years.

And I'm using your terrific book @Carl_Zimmer! (Should anyone want to check it out, it's a fantastic read carlzimmer.com/books/evolution… #science #books)

I just realised I'm using the 'bookmark' function on here specifically to make note of books I need to get.

Anyhow - bookmarked! And evolutionary content sounds fantastic.

This is a nicely written, informative, and useful post that unfortunately once again completely ignores or at best tangentially touches upon the needs that Red Hat is missing for running academic #HPC clusters. I’d love an opportunity to discuss this in more detail with someone not in the sales side of Red Hat, preferably in management. Also this misses the fact that most OS distributions are freely available and companies make their money on higher level products.
#hpc
in reply to Alan Sill

@AlanSill I hope you get that meeting. As I'm not a Red Hat employee, I can't help you get it. 🙁

Certainly, there are free OS distributions, but they generally have a five year life cycle, like Stream, because a 10 year life cycle and a 3 year cadence means that the vendor has to maintain a lot of releases simultaneously, and many of those releases significantly differ from the upstream projects in the last five years, so backporting patches them is much more difficult.
