A third of #US #deer have had #COVID—and they then infected humans at least 3 times. People in the US transmitted the pandemic #coronavirus to white-tailed deer at least 109 times! New study builds on data suggesting #whitetaileddeer could be a #virus reservoir. Researchers surveyed over 11,000 white-tailed deer from 26 states and DC. Of those, 31.6% had antibodies indicating a previous infection with #SARSCoV2, and 12.2% had detectable SARS-CoV-2 virus. arstechnica.com/health/2023/07…

Una respuesta de algunos gobiernos ha sido militarizar sus fronteras, una medida que ha servido para criminalizar el derecho de movilidad bajo el disfraz de proteger la "Seguridad Nacional".

#México no ha sido la excepción 👇

Yeah, we think alike on THAT point. But where you find Telegram an acceptable compromise, I don't.

Prefer XMPP, even if, alas, some parts (XEP) of it don't evolve anymore.

in reply to Vivian "Bigou"

@Bigou @weedtofu To be blunt, I literally don't care in the slightest what people prefer. I go where the majority of the users are to spread my stuff as a creator and interact with the community. Matrix is terrible for that. Discord, Telegram and here work well.

If you really like the principles of the #Framework laptop, but their lineup doesn’t work for you, you need bigger hardware, a GPU, cheaper options or just more customization, then I have the next best thing!

They support #Linux, #CoreBoot, they have more laptops, and pretty much the same repairability as a Framework, without the generational upgrades:

I get that valve has a company structure that they like and don't want to force anyone to work on games they don't want to, but good grief would it kill them to hire someone to just implement some things the community is begging and pleading for?

One weapon per event and players would be sobbing with joy.

Dr. Gladys West grew up in 1930s VA. She had limited opportunities as a black girl in the south, but went on to become a mathematician.

In the 1950s, West helped program the Naval Ordnance Research Calculator. Later, she worked on modeling the shape of the Earth & helped develop satellite geodesy models, a foundation of GPS.

West was not formally credited for her work until 2018 when the VA General Assembly honored her contributions. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladys… #HistoryRemix #history #science

Good thread from Prachee Avasthi on Twitter about eLife's preprint review system ...

in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward
But to be provocative, above you described "a field dominated by strong opinions that make it hard to publish anything". But to anti-vaxxers, that is epidemiology. To creationists, that is evolutionary biology. It can be hard to distinguish consensus from disagreement when you're in the thick of it. Only way I see to distinguish the two is to design a system that encourages input on decisions from as many experts as possible
in reply to Alex Crits-Christoph

@alexcc yes that's a good point. It can be subjective. Harsh reviews and rejection are certainly unpleasant, but not necessarily bad in the long run if it can lead to positive improvement.
in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward
Yeah, one perspective here is if other experts were willing to spend time reviewing and responding to your work, that's because they see it as being serious science and worth responding to - a good thing, even if it gets really ugly! Few experts on molecular dating would waste time responding to anything here: answersingenesis.org/theory-of…

which on one hand means they spend most of their time on real science (good), but also means a lot of misinformation goes unanswered

in reply to Alex Crits-Christoph

@alexcc Yes you make a good point on consensus vs disagreement. Just to clarify- my reference to strong opinions is mainly about situations where reviewers have strong but contradictory or opposing views. So in those situations there isn't really a consensus, per se, and it can be difficult to address all reviewer concerns at once.
