โ€˜Barbieโ€™ one-star reviews from โ€˜furious menโ€™ become hilarious viral meme

They all wanted to lust after Margot Robbie and got two hours of woke feminist agenda. Such a tragedy.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

Thank you! I had to try three timesโ€”my first two instances blew up after I wandered off because it was so quiet.

Eugen is probably so sick of seeing my name come up at this point, but I tried to express my very real sympathy in this post.

@Gargron

in reply to Erin Kissane

"If I were Eugen Rochko, I would die of stress." Not that far off the truth! I resonate with a lot of the points in the post. Frustrating that even as we improve the UX people throw around so many (sometimes outdated) tips that it makes newcomers feel overwhelmed anyway.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Yeah, that's a bummer. I try to provide gentle, private feedback to the unsolicited-tip dogpiles.

My hope is that if, culturally, we got to this point where providing alt-text is part of the Mastodon identity (which is rad af), we should be able to do the same thing for the new user welcome and not dogpile folks for perceived CW transgressions, etc.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I really appreciate the work you do, and I have a little bit of insight into some of the pressure (and constant yelling and assumptions of bad faith) from my work elsewhere. I couldn't hack it for long, myself.

Thanks for reading!

@Haste

in reply to Eugen Rochko

As an older, not very techie person, I find the tips overwheming and stay away from them. I have just been trying to find interesting people, but am unsure if I am even seeing who is in my own instance, let alone others. Thanks for trying to keep people happy and for doing this research.

Anyone have advice on how to get the Spades genome assembler to use less memory?

for some data I switch to megahit when spades keeps crashing. Spades has huge ram requirements and I've never had luck trying to reduce it.

Been a busy past few days with work, travelling, and fighting off jet lag... but one thing that I am happy to announce is that an HPC community engineering team that I helped start is now officially a part of the Ubuntu project. If you are interested in using Ubuntu for HPC, or just interested in being involved with a community engineering team, you should totally check out this article below ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of my favourite slides from the #Spack workshop at #Pearc2023. This slide provides a great explanation for why HPC clusters need special-purpose package managers rather than using traditional Linux package managers like apt and dnf.

Next time I have someone ask me why I do not just use apt for installing software, I will just send them this slide ๐Ÿ˜…

My #HPC container BoF at #pearc2023 was a huge success today. Even though it was scheduled at 8:00 AM, we still had a great turnout. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Science is for everyone, but not everyone can see themselves there.

Thatโ€™s one reason I love this beautifully illustrated, FREE to download comic book developed by Flint teachers, artists & plant biologists. Through classroom modules w real plants, high school students learn how traits evolve over time through natural selection w characters who look like more of them. And that matters toward building a more inclusive STEM future. hioh.education/monkeyflowers-gโ€ฆ #science #art

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

this is terrific! Although Iโ€™ve never heard back from either the Florida or Texas school boards about my offer to sell them my original book, which this beautiful artwork reminds me of, โ€œDick and Jane Discover the Wonderful World of Opiumโ€, at a bulk discount.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

This is so neat! Books, TV, and film play a huge role in inspiring young people to go into the STEM fields, and having more inclusive and accurate representation can only foster more ideas, more solutions, and more equity -- and hopefully a planet we can all cohabitate on peacefully.

#RepresentationMatters

My god. The New York Times Opinion section is giving space to full-on fascist Chris Rufo to push his agenda โ€” to push lies in service of, yes, the F word: fascism.

Look, I try to be measured. But this is a five-alarm fire for US democracy. This is like publishing Goebbels in 1934.

This is as bad as publishing Tom Cotton, and the Opinion editors should lose their jobs for it.

NYT has ten million subscribers, and approximately 9.99 million do not have time to read media criticism in depth. /1
