We made it to the opening of "radical landscapes" with Thalia Campbell to sit next to her banner.

vagabond reshared this.

in reply to vagabond

Presumably that's not the "radical landscapes" that was at the Tate last year and is the one that just opened at the William Morris Gallery?

vagabond reshared this.

in reply to RooftopJacks

@rooftopaxx yep it is, we took Thalia to hang with the London arty crew and the old feminists 😀
in reply to RooftopJacks

@rooftopaxx we are going to be thinking about shutting down all #OMN instances as the is currently no money to pay the hosting, and outreaching is not working without a LOT of help.

The #DIY coding project is not actually working anyway, the has been no movement beyond chatter on the tech side of #OMN for the last few years, and the #fedivers stuff was set up to seed this dev.

Any ideas for a good path, happy to pass the instances on to a new responsible crew.

#modteam

in reply to vagabond

ta, guess it'd be time to head over to kollectiva, what's the approximate timing on this?
This entry was edited (2 years ago)
in reply to RooftopJacks

@rooftopaxx no timing yet, just a heads-up, will be a full month notice on the actually shut down, but will try more outreach first, and like the idea of passing the instance on to a new team?
in reply to vagabond

*puts on former 'sysadmin' hat, adjusts to a jaunty rake*
don't really see any great coherence or mutuality within 'campaign', let it go gracefully. that is all.
in reply to RooftopJacks

@rooftopaxx the problem is the is nothing kollectiva as well, its a problem with the coding of this #openweb reboot, its fading as it goes #mainstreaming this is not a surprise thus the thinking about shutting down, only have so much focus.
in reply to RooftopJacks

@rooftopaxx
If the community has not already forged and formed itself such that they will self-support, then it's time to let go.

While I don't see masto as particularly harmful, it and the fediverse as it currently stands is not proving to be one of the ways to solve actual problems.

Social _media_ is useless to most people, in much the same way as news _media_.

We've just released Ardour 8.1 with bugfixes and improvements. Connecting to Launchpad Pro has been fixed, the Varispeed dialog now shows percentages, drawing velocity curves now only affects selected notes if there are any. For more info, see here:

"It's important to remember that the 'drugs' aren't just the pills we stash in our medicine cabinets. Ask yourself this: is it really acceptable that we only bothered to test sex differences for general anesthesia in 1999? They are central as characters for obvious dramatic benefits: the "inside outsider." But what about literature creators? Is a significant proportion of them fostered, adopted, or orphaned as children?"

Ten years ago, with @cfraisserios, we were dissatisfied with averaging windows in genome scans and decided to calculate FST90 (the 90th percentile of the FST distribution) and FSTmax (the maximum FST of the window) instead. We struggled to convince the reviewers that this was a good idea. We now have a paper we can cite to justify that it's the right approach. Why FST90 in addition to FSTmax? Because in true data FSTmax is full of rotten SNPs. #PopGen

Virophages are viruses that infect giant viruses, typically resulting in a lower burst size for the giant virus. In our latest preprint we report virophage-like sequences associated with insect poxviruses.

Their genomes of these elements are really interesting. This also opens up the possibility that hyperparasitic viruses are associated with a much broader range of DNA viruses than is commonly thought.

Very cool - would these be the first virophages of an animal virus? Congrats to you and Zach.

Any interest in a bsky invite? I'm splitting time here and there now, there's a decent community over there (and no jack dorsey in sight)

in reply to Alex Crits-Christoph

@alexcc I call them virophages for simplicity, but they belong to a broader group of polinton-like viruses that includes Mavericks, which were discovered a while ago and were once thought to be transposons before their capsids were identified. But I believe we have the first evidence linking animal elements to large DNA viruses, indicating they may have a virophage-like lifestyle in animals.

If you want to go down that road

I do not really want to, I already read all these "arguments" of DRM proponents far too many times. I already know the next one is « Then electricity is a DRM too, because you can not play your games without it! ».

I find it very disappointing that people who are OK with DRM-gated games distribution (it is a choice, one I respect) feel obligated to say « DRM used for distribution is not DRM! » instead of admitting « I am OK with DRM for distribution, as long as this is the only DRM in use. ».

Hey, I will even give an example: I already bought many games with DRM-gated multiplayer, because I am OK with that as long as I do not plan to ever play multiplayer in these games. Even if I would rather buy a build with multiplayer fully removed, I can make a compromise for these games. See? Not that hard. I did not have to pretend that « DRM does not count when it is only gating access to multiplayer. ».
