Where do jets go when they no longer fly? What happens to shipping containers when they aren’t useful anymore for cargo? The answer is invisible to most of us, but for Cássio Vasconcellos, abandoned trains, planes, and automobiles are far from forgotten.

Photographing and stitching together composites, Vasconcellos condenses details of urban infrastructure like highways and parking lots into sprawling, all-over compositions.

If I understood that correctly it will add something like the Unity debugging utility. This is awesome, sometimes seeing the state of the game and beeing able to debug the code in parallel is really helpful

Looks cool but I've just noticed a worrying trend.

One of my browser plugins highlights when a game is excluded from the Family Sharing service and this is the 4th I've seen in the last day or so. It used to be the odd AAA release but now it's a bunch of smaller indie games.

As a Dad with 2 kids starting to get into regular gaming the new version of the family sharing on Steam has been wonderful but it will be seriously kneecapped if Devs are seeing it as a bad thing for them

literally who hurt genomics to make you all encode one specific kind of number as the ASCII characters from ! to ~ as an integer input to some logarithm function, but then others of you changed the function but kept encoding it as a single ASCII character ranging from -5 to 62 (???), and then later they decided that -5 to 62 was silly and so they changed that to 0-62 and throwing away half the original range for no reason, except actually it's 0-40 by convention.

did anyone consider "encoding it as a number"

#DataStandards #FileFormats #Genomics

in reply to jonny (good kind)

There's no memory advantage to encoding it as a character vs a number, is there?
in reply to Dr. Angus Andrea Grieve-Smith

@grvsmth filesize advantage. Quality as a number would require minimum two characters (single digit plus delimiter) and maximum of 3 characters (two numbers plus delimiter). Fixed width 0 led would still require two characters. ASCII coding makes it one character per quality score. Minimizes cold file sizes.

Now the multiple FASTQ quality ASCII coding specs are an artifact of Illumina choices. Sanger phred scale should have been the standard all along.

GOG are doubling down on game preservation, and making it easier to see which games run well on modern PCs | Rock Paper Shotgun

GOG harkening back to "Good Old Games".
It's a great way to differentiate themselves on top of "no DRM".

Maybe someday someone will be able to get some lawyer to find the paperwork for who owns "No One Lives Forever" so it can be updated and preserved.
None of my current laptops even have a CD-ROM drive to read my disks and the hacks to get them running still leave them at an ancient, tiny resolution.

I was curious to see the post, but I don't open random links like this. This seems like a security issue.

infosec.exchange is running a fork of Mastodon with design and UI modifications. I am not responsible for this. Posts do not collapse like this in upstream.

@ntnsndr @Hyolobrika on face, that seems like a reasonable hypothesis! maybe in the open source world, we grew too comfortable with “benevolent dictator for life”. and obviously, surveillant commercial platforms.

One more update: The `fediverse:creator` metatag is now inserted into game and blog post pages that you have authored when you assign a Mastodon username to your account.

This will enable itch.io link embeds on Mastodon to show author attribution of your fediverse account. Learn more here: blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/…

You must opt-in to the domains that are eligible for attribution from Edit Profile > Public Profile > Verification (and scroll to the bottom, add itch.io and your own subdomain)
