Study finds if you want to win a Nobel Prize, be a male from a wealthy family. If you're a woman, you need to be from a particularly rich family. The avg laureate grew up in a household just below the top 10%. >50% come from the top 5%. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Went down to the shore today to fetch some seaweed for the garden. This variety of seaweed was super striking compared to the abundant olive and green going on.

Unsure what it is, the shape would say bladder wrack (Fucus Vesiculosus) but I'm not sure because of the colour

A fiery red and ginger coloured bit of seaweed attached to a rock. It has flat fronds and the air-bladders are in pairs.

“Within the party Ronald Reagan once led so capably, it is increasingly fashionable to suggest that the sort of global leadership he modeled is no longer America’s place,” McConnell said. “But let’s be absolutely clear: America will not be made great again by those who are content to manage our decline”

McConnell had his chance to do something useful about Trump and he failed. He is a coward. He has personally done more damage to the U.S. than almost anyone else over a career of obstructionism and "legislative terrorism." politico.com/news/2024/12/07/m…

Steinacleit stone circle and cairn (also called Stein-A-Cleit; Siadar; Shader) on the isle of Lewis up on a boggy moor. "This bundle of stones on a low hill above a loch was originally interpreted as being the remains of a large chambered cairn and stone circle." Photos June 2021.

A remarkable transition:

Kenya is Africa's leading country when it comes to renewables.

In 2000 fossil fuels contributed 60% to electricity generation.

Today it is 6%. In 2023 electricity was from almost 50% geothermal, 20% wind+solar and 22% hydro.

I'm trying to rehome these Totoro slippers fast.
I know people who sell these sorts of collectibles for good money.
I am terrible at selling things, even when I could use the financial boost.
But I have to get rid of stuff swiftly in order to fit into the new house in less than two months.
I am feeling overwhelmed. I am also feeling sad that I may have to throw out things just because I don't have the time to place them with people who will appreciate them.
sigh!

@fionag11 The opshop/charity shop near us puts all the toys on a table by the pavement where all the local toddlers play with them, leaving the toys a mess before anyone even buys anything.

In the end I found someone who was so excited to pick them up as a Christmas present for their daughter who is crazy for Totoro!

Forehead injury incurred today at the @mediaarchaeologylab while trying to get an Apple IIe to work. All the while cursing Steve Jobs's insistence on putting power switches on the back.

@alwirtes That's awesome. These were the first computers I ever used, but now I feel they are totally foreign to me. I can barely begin.

How many times have I worried about this while writing a story?

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Why!!? I thought I had put this all behind me, buying a game bundle and never playing them! I know it's an illness, but would you wave a glass of whiskey under an alcoholic's nose? NO!
