I posted asking for help on this a bit ago, and while I didn't get any solutions, it did get my brain thinking outside of the box, and I found the solution, its easy, but proof that the UI, especially the settings layout really needs some work around here.
For whatever reason, the necessary setting isn't under the timeline settings, but Social Networks
The key setting here is Followed Content Scope, default is 'Conversations my follows started or commented on', but if'n you change it to 'Only conversations my follows started' if will only show original posts and boosts.
Hopefully this'll help others, I mentioned in a comment on my original post, but that could easily be missed, so here we go. Oh, and if'n you've any tag suggestions, send them my way, and I'll prolly add them.
thank you so much - we really need this kind of thoughts.

@Matthias maybe we should start blocking whole instances, if they don't start cooperating and helping to prevent spam.
And I don't care if it is mastodon.social or any other big server.
If they don't even take simple steps to prevent spam, then they are among the bad servers and spam distributors that leads to set them on official block lists.
@hoergen
In my view, these servers are behaving recklessly. In the midst of a spam wave, there is no reason why moderation should not be tightened. Leaving registration open, on the other hand, is an invitation to anyone who wants to harm other people. This is something we are willing to accept. That is negligent and not a good calling card for the Fediverse as a whole.
Yes, such servers are unmoderated from my point of view
No user will be rejected. It may just take a little longer for the registration to be checked.

We really need to get mainstream media talking about the insight explained in this article - theguardian.com/commentisfree/… - that their focus on “border spectacles” - such as the UK's 'small boats' reporting - leads directly, inevitably to mob violence.
The BBC etc would say they are just reporting events - but they're not. They entirely miss the context - for example they do not report that almost all immigration is by air, and is people with tickets and documents, or that the vast majority of people arriving without documentation are in fact subsequently found to be legitimate asylum seekers.
But these non-televisual border and legal processes don't make good broadcasting, and oligarchs' right-wing rags aren't drumming up hate around them, so the mainstream 'impartial' media doesn't think they're news either.
An effigy of refugees, burned by a crowd: this is where Europe’s brutal fantasy of border control has led us
The shocking scene in Northern Ireland is the result of a decade spent militarising Europe’s fringes – and dismissing the human cost, says migration and border researcher Maurice StierlMaurice Stierl (The Guardian)
