📢 📢"HARDCORE PIXELFED USERS" 📢📢
What do you think about creating a voluntary "discover system" for sharing (linking) other people's photos and accounts?

Reasons behind this idea:
1. often, by chance, I discover good photographers and I'm like: "how have I missed this until now?"
2. boosts/reblogs don't work;
3. the Discover page only shows the top accounts all the time (same 7-8 people??). Which is great, they take briliant photos and deserve to be there. But it's not a Discover page, is it? It's a TOP/Trending page.

My thoughts so far:
1. Come up with an hashtag and make it a weekly event (like caturday, doorsday, monochromemonday...you get the idea);
2. Publish a post with links to fediverse photos/accounts we like and keep it there for at least 48 hours;
3. 100% voluntary, no pressure, just giving back to the community.

What do you think? Is it a stupid idea? How to improve on it?
Let me know in the comments.

RIP Yellow Mug btw, who died in the sink last week 🪦

This is a great idea, perhaps we should add a new discovery feed 🤔

Hello Lisbon! :unwanted_love:

On May 20th, our member Femke Snelting will contribute to the Culture Converge 2026 by sharing on TITiPI's methods, political positionality and open-ended questions in the opening panel.

In words of the organisers, "an opportunity to explore ways to navigate the digital disruption critically and together; an invitation to conceive the possibility of digital practices and platforms that truly connect us, and, in some instances, of opting out altogether."

me: man I hate reverse engineering decompression routines. what if I just take the ghidra decomp of the routine and stuff it into a new C file, and call that from my python script? Surely that'll work?

me: hurray, it worked! I can see no downsides to this!

guy who owns the rights to the game: Hey I wanted to rerelease it with some minor graphical changes, and I saw you reverse engineered the compression. Could you help us do that, since you understand the compression?

me: UHHHH NOT REALLY

@neauoire@merveilles.town

heyo @neauoire, what's your opinion on stateful ports?

e.g. I want to connect to an address, I set the action port to connect mode by writing action/Connect, then I write in the address string until the null byte

I understand that this is opposed to the file device which does this by writing a pointer* to the filename in memory and then an operation on another port, is that the preferred way? (if so, why?)

in reply to ∴ esoterik ∴

yup, and in this case the action port would be a single-byte port, where you write the command and address string into the port, one byte at a time

Oh, I don't mind, so something more like screen/sprite, yeah whatever feels best.

so far two people have responded wanting to degrade the YouTube Shorts Experience. users express frustration with shorts getting in the way of videos, and want them to be separated. we hear you! youtube will become an exclusively shorts-based platform, with legacy videos being moved to our new platform, Google Gemini Video
in reply to Lynnesbian

since Google Gemini Video released eighteen seconds ago, we've made some exciting changes. Google Gemini Video is now Allo Plus, which will replace Google Messages. playables have been moved to Google Play, and Google Play is now the Google Store with Play. legacy video can now be found in a new app called Android TV, where runtime is limited to fifteen minutes

Boy howdy do I have a laundry hack for my fellow thrifters and upcyclers:

Removing old perfumed laundry detergent that gives me migraines used to take FOREVER.

In desperation today after washing a few shirts at least 3 times using baking soda, vinegar, and borax (not together) soaking each time, I threw about a cup of 90% isopropyl alcohol in a plain water wash and let it soak for about 2 hours. After it rinsed and spun out, the smell was nearly GONE.

WUT... HOLY CRAP.

STOKED

are there examples of US newsrooms or media outlets who are explicit about *not* tracking readers on their websites? (or tracking for internal use only but not selling data into the data broker tracking stream?)

ooooh teach them about alternatives to venture backed corporations. Any alternative!!!!
once i realized my students had zero context for @ntnsndr or @rwg or @andresmh 's work on platform cooperatives i launched into the comparative structures, labor relations, governance, financing and micro histories of coops, b-corps, mom and pop shops, shareholder backed corporations and VC backed startups. Easily the most influential mini impromptu lecture i gave in years.
in reply to Cyberlyra

totally. One of the big realizations in my early years teaching is that students actually had never heard of labor organizing. I had to switch from being appalled to seeing it as a wonderful opportunity to teach:)
in reply to Nathan Schneider

i've had that experience too, but this class is a journalism class (media/law) so i can bring that up easily early on and i do.
