#Brazil: "A large portion of the electorate voted for a gang that attempted to stage a coup d’état; plotted to assassinate the president-elect, his vice, and Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes; and has supporters who planned to plant bombs in airports and occupy military barracks to protest the previous election result. A large portion of Brazilians voted for a gang whose leader—currently in prison but hoping his son will win and release him—has publicly said his hero is colonel Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, torturer not only of adults who opposed the dictatorship but also of little children, the offspring of political prisoners.

A large portion of Brazilians voted for a gang that, during history’s worst pandemic since the Middle Ages, deliberately delayed vaccines and boycotted prevention measures, leaving Brazil to report 30% of the deaths worldwide during the height of Covid-19, although the country represents less than 3% of the world population.

A large portion of the electorate voted for a group that is working to destroy the biggest tropical forest on the planet, upon which depends our ability to combat global heating, a phenomenon that has already intensified extreme weather from the south to the north of Brazil and around the world. A large portion of the electorate voted against itself.

Flávio Bolsonaro received the most votes in eight of the ten municipalities that have had the highest deforestation rates in the Amazon over the past decade. If he wins the runoff, with this Congress and a weakened Supreme Court, the Amazon will reach the point of no return. And so will we. This is already happening in various parts of the Amazon biome."
