Indeed, a simple #Gnome office suite on basis of #LibreOfficeKit is probably the lowest hanging fruit to create an office suite. LibreOfficeKit is very powerful and is continuously further developed as it's the main engine of @collabora Online.
It has full document fidelity, so even if Gnome office would have few features, it would still be able to open/import/save/export/display all features. It's a pity that no one has tackled it yet.

I don't get it. I think that's a waste of resources. Why don't work on a better UI integration of #LibreOffice into #GNOME? LibreOffice is so customizable. The first thing I do after an installation is to make my toolbar simple and remove everything I don't need. I think it would be better to improve LibreOffice than build another office suite that hardly anybody uses in the end...

I wish someone could create a fast, simple, and easy-to-use #Gnome office based on #LibreOffice Kit.
This doesn't seem to be complicated wiht #libreofficekit and has full access to all LibreOffice technology features.

The open source vim-like spreadsheet program sc-im is wonderful to work with. If you use Vim regularly, it quickly becomes intuitive.

sc-im is entirely viable as a LibreOffice Calc or Microsoft Office Excel alternative in the terminal. It even supports embedded Lua scripting. It's a one-man passion project that really needs more hands.

Similarly, the fork #LibreOffice was created in 2010 by @tdforg based on predicting the future risk.

Yes, we need a lightweight alternative to #LibreOffice that integrates with the #Gnome desktop. However, we don't need a new office core, just a slim UI. #LibreOfficeKit is slim and extremely powerful. All documents supported by @libreoffice are displayed correctly immediately. @CollaboraOffice Onlline, iOS, Android uses it. @tdforg has already developed a prototype ‘#GTK Tiled Viewer’ dev.blog.documentfoundation.or…. I hope someone is interested in taking on the new @gnome office.

30,000 PCs are moving from Microsoft Office to #LibreOffice in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. At the recent Univention Summit 2025, we met the people handling the migration: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #opensource #freesoftware

Thanks Brodie, I love this video! From the good old times a few years into working at #Canonical. #CUPS already used by every distro for several years, but not all apps sent jobs in PDF format yet, several, like OpenOffice (predecessor of #LibreOffice) still sent PostScript, standard of old #Unix times. And printers still needed drivers and some manufacturers made (usually closed-source) ones, and everyone with an integration more awkward than the other ...

Happy Tuesday!

The second release candidate of #LibreOffice 24.2 is now available! This will be our next major update, with a new "year.month" version scheme – so it'll arrive in February 2024. And it has a bunch of new features too, which you can help to test: qa.blog.documentfoundation.org… #foss #opensource
